Has anyone started work on a new strain? I'd like to hear about your trials and tribulations as Id like to conjure up my own selective strain one day- I'm new to the forums sorry

About one third of the membership here are 'breeders' of them 99% are making their own strains/pheno s
many fail, many succeed and a few give up mostly due to lack of experience, enthusiasm and the most through lack of room
you gotta stay dedicated. have the 'space' and above all a plan, worked out months ahead
many great books abound ..this one is essential:

This is not so great .. an ok read.. but the writer ain't no horticulturist,
with many faults and false s's, is often quoted here on RIU, but the 'fun' is finding these faults ...lol

Beyond mere random chucks, you need patience, room, more patience, and start with some form of even high-level plan as to what you're trying to do (too many forks in the road to just wing it). And oh yeah, you must be brutal and be willing to cull 99% of what pops, only the best/strongest can survive, Darwinism at it's finest

Robert Clarke 'Marijuana Botany' is the book to buy sometimes you can find it at 1/2 price book stores
So you want to start your own strain, anyone can do it, many have done it by accident lol. Start with good genetics… if you're unable to get a good clone of something thats fine. Just start with good seed stock. Blueberry is a good starting point, Serious Seeds, Mr Nice, Ace, Canabiogen, Snow High these breeders either have really worked harmonious strains, lot of the strains from all these guys are landraces worked into their own strains so often only a cross of 2-3 strains. A lot of the chuckers putting gear out now are taking crosses that were made by 2-3 strains with another cross made by 2-3 strains (or more) crossing it 1 time and selling the F1's as strains, but honestly their not strains their crosses with potential for 4-5 strains in there… I called out a breeder on this and to me I got the most BS answer ever… again if I'm paying $90 for seeds I want to get at least 75% looking like the desired pheno…. Plushberry is a good example of what I'm saying.. everyone wants the BCS pheno… so why would the breeder not take the cross beyond F1 and isolate the BCS pheno? Laziness perhaps or just not a true breeder just a chucker with 50 F1 crosses.
Here is my question to breeder I asked… we'll call him SC
You say that there are 4-5 phenos in each of the lines (at the time I think said breeder had about 12 crosses) why wouldn't you work the strain to isolate the phenos people want?
"I like to leave variation in there and let the grower decide what pheno the want" that to me is a BS answer growers want harmonious strains… if my buddy in NY buys a pack and tells me how killer a couple plants are, I want to grow same pack and know that I have a GREAT chance of getting that pheno he liked, not a 1:5 chance.

I get what you mean and when the time comes I'm going to try and breed to get a more sativa than indica strain
