New light, how close to plants?

I am starting a new grow with my new 250w HPS light. If anyone has any experience with a 250w setup could you tell me how far away from the plants did you have yours at? I only have a total of 4ft in heaght in my room. And i need to know how tall to vegg my clones for. I think i can grow about 32in to 36in tall plants. But not sure because this is my first HPS grow.

I had a 250...i kept it about 18 inches above the tops...

Thanks for the info. I am planning on buying one of those Pyrex Bake Rounds and making a cool tube for it. But i will start with it around 18inches to start out with.

no that is to far. i have a 400watt and need a max of 1.5feet way so u should probly be around 1foot

the cool tube is a great idea - you'll be happy you did it.

test it urself. hand tooo hot = plants will burn...make ur hand nice and comfy between ur light and plants. happy growing!
