New grower curing question

New grower here.

I’ve done pretty well with my first grow. I’m using a grow tent with a 600w LED light. Venilated, small fan constantly moving the air inside, and the temp is set between 75-80 with RH floating around 60-65 for the final veg state. I ran into a temperature shock at one point but my plants came back to be very healthy looking at the end.

I’m doing a staggered harvest to give my lower buds a little more time to get the trichomes the color I want. My question is about the top bud that I have cut off and began to cure.

I hung for 2 1/2 days and now have had it in a mason jar for the last two days. I have a hygrometer monitoring my RH inside the jar and have burped it. I’ve done a lot of research and understand the RH I’m looking for etc. My trichomes were hazy just to the point of the tips starting to brown. They were really sticky.

Here is my question/concern. My bud has gone from having that nice semi dank smell to smelling not so good. I understand the curing process will, or is supposed to improve the aroma over time. Researched, and found that a “hay like” smell is normal in the beginning, which is what I have.

Is this normal and when should I expect the aromas to improve?

2 .5 days isnt long enough to hang. Even the smallest buds take longer than that when on the stem

The hay smell is mold; you have jarred the buds before they were dry. Not much you can do; if it smells bad now jarring it longer won't help. Take all the bud out of the jar and let it air dry. This is a very common mistake; everyone does it first time around so don't sweat it just learn from it and move on.
For the next harvest do the following:
1. Snip off only the fan leaves; leave the sugar leaves to dry.
2. Try to leave the plant as whole as possible; don't cut the buds off. Leave the main stem and branches intact. When you've cut off all the fans and/or any leaves with a stem attached cut only once at the base of the plant to finally kill it. Take your time. Cut off any lower buds or larf that you want to dry out so you can smoke later or turn to concentrate or edibles; leave a 1/2 stem to hang the plant on.
3. Hang the entire plant as whole as possible in an enclosed dark area like a closet or tent. Even just a box to limit airflow will work. You want enough space for good air exchange but limited circulation. Forget about it for 5 days or so; should take 7 days or more to dry completely. Keep at room temps or lower.
4. Wait until the branches are brittle. They should audibly snap when bent. If the branch bends over and creases without breaking it's not done yet. Once your bud is dry trim off the sugar leaf over something to catch it with like a plate or piece of glass; use the trims for hash or edibles. I drysift them and collect the keif; yummy!
5. Place in a jar but don't seal it completely until you are sure the bud is dry. Put the lid on upside down covering half the jar mouth for 24 hours. Then seal it up. Burp once daily; your buds will be fully cured in a week or 2.
Smell inside the jar daily; you already know what it's not supposed to smell like so if it's still dank you are good to go. If it smells like hay dump it all out and let it airdry some more.

My advice and the best advice would be not to cure or jar your first few grows until you have learnt to dry bud first.

To dry bud trim and hang in the right place then walk away for two weeks no less.

Thecinternet is so full of bs, i didnt spread that crap, blame a lot of newbies and internet wanna bes.

When youve learnt to dry bud then give us a shout and ill tell you the exact process and best day to jar on.

I don't bother with hygrometer's and all that. I hang my buds or lay them on screens until dry. Toss in jars and leave the lid off for a couple days.

Yes. I usually dry a minimum of 7 days in 50% RH. After trying a multitude of cures for some very dank weed, i consulted guys who have been doing this for 20+ years. Every single old timer said that the best way to cure is to put it in a grocery sack, roll it closed, and flip your weed around twice a day for a week, then once for the next two weeks. Some strains take longer than others. Patience is key here. I made the mistake of smoking it too soon once. The difference in letting it go an extra few weeks was huge. More flavor and more potency for sure.

Some may argue that jarring is simply storage.

The whole burping thing just to ensure no extra moisture and not needed if bud is actually dried correctly.

Be carefull the hype :-)
