New Grow - Temperature Problem.....please help

Hi everone!!

This is my first grow and I am experiencing very slooooooooooooooooooow growth. I believe the slow growth is being caused by the temperature being too high. I am growing in a 2x2x5.5 tent using an 8 bulb T5 fisture. I have the lights real close down to the plants just like everyone keeps saying on here to do. The problem is that my temp at plant level under the lights is running between 31-33 degrees Celcius.....which is pretty damn hot. I have now opened the tent door and I am running a small fan (all that fits - keep in mind its atight space) in the tent and I just put a big fan outside of the tent directed towards the vent window of the tent. I haven't started running the inline fan yet.

Any other suggestions to get my temp down? Am I better off raising the lights higher above the plants to keep it cooler? Here are some pics of two of my four plants on day 13 from seed. You can see they aen't really where they should be in terms of size....but they do look real healthy? Please help!! Thanks!!!

I was concerned that it would just suck out the cool air that I am blowing in through the tent vents above the lights. No?? I'll turn it on and see if that does anything.

turn the inline on and it will create negative pressure prob no need to blow air in just make sure to leave vent flaps open

use that inline to exchanges the air in there, a few passive/holes open will make sure the under pressure pull in fresh air from out side, it will also provide fresh air/co2 for the plants, remember its a liveing plant, need more then just water and light .. and once in flowering they will smell a lot so a filter for your inline vent might be a good idea before 12/12 ..

I'm at the same stage as you pretty much, maybe a week forward. I also have an 8 banger t5 (2'). I have only 4 lights on. 12" above the plants. Any lower or more lights and they shy away and droop.

I have fans blowing around, but I only run my 4" inline for a couple minutes, 4 times per day. So my cabinet only refreshes the air every 6 hours. I was running it constantly and my humidity was in the low 20%, and my girls stopped growing for like 10 days until I turned off the inline exhaust and raised the humidity.

I'm targeting around 50% humidity. I think that little the babies cannot get enough water through the roots, they need water in the air. Check your humidity %.

humidity isnt that important unless its super high or super low

Woot Woot!! Temp is down to 29 degrees - which puts me at the high end of acceptable temperatures. Ideally, I'd like it down around 26-27.....but this is better than 33. Also, temp should go down as the plant grows and I can raise the light. There will be more space for air to circulate between plant and light.

When the temp was high....I was running at about 45% humidity. Now that the temperature has dropped my humidity has now dropped to 35%. Seems pretty tough to get a balance between temp and humidity.

whats that like 84f? whats the ambient temp of the room the tent is in is there anyway to drop the temp in the room some

Yes about 84. The room is warm. It's the furnace room in my house. This is why I have the fan blowing in the room outside of the tent.

Nice!!! I got my temp down to 26.5 and my humidity and 45%. I did have to raise the lights a bit to get it all to work. Seems it made a big difference. Here is a picture taken 15 hours after the first. I've posted both pics from yeaterday and today as a comparison.

They look fine to me, but I'm no expert. I am doing my first grow using CFLs and I think they just grow slow at that stage. The amount a plant can grow is based on how much photosynthesis it can do, which is dependent on the amount of leaf surface available to collect light. Tiny leaves mean slower growth, but the rate of growth will accelerate as the plant grows more leaves. So, slow at first and then faster and faster until you post asking how to slow it down because it's growing out of your tent.

I am under a lot of CFLs and try to keep the bulbs at least a few inches (1 inch = 2.54 cm) from the leaves. If you think moving the lights a little bit away from the leaves would allow them to be a little cooler you might want to try it. 33 Celsius is pretty warm.

Now that I have said all of this, if you get different advice from an experienced grower you probably want to take that advice and put mine aside. As I said, I am on my first grow under lights, so I am on a steep learning curve.

You say the plants are on day 13 from seed. Is this day 13 from breaking the soil, or day 13 from planting seeds?

Thanks Bob. It is day 13 from seed. The problem I had was that everything just stopped. I deduced that my plants were under stress from the heat. I am going to gradually bring the lights closer to the plant to see exactly when the temp starts to rise again. A lot of this is trial and error I think. You have to experiment a little to see what works best in your own unique growing environment. That's also part of the fun!! Thanks again!

T5 fixture that holds 8 24" bulbs. Also, it's not too bad in there. The best I've had it was 52% and the worst 35%. While 35% is not ideal, it should work fine and the plants should acclimate to the more arid environment.
