A co-op business could keep marijuana production local, says Keith Kennedy. (CBC)

A group of Prince Edward Islanders who use medical marijuana is trying to develop a plan for a co-op business to grow the drug.

As of the end of next month, medical marijuana users in Canada will no longer be allowed to grow their own supply. Instead, they'll have to obtain the drug from a supplier authorized by the federal government.

Keith Kennedy has been using medical marijuana since injuring his back in 2002. He said there would be many advantages for Islanders using medical marijuana to have their own, approved production co-op.

"The client is going to be connected to the plant that they wish to consume. They're going to know that it's organic. They're going to know that it has a high quality, that it's going to be good for them," said Kennedy.

"We would be creating jobs, involving our consumers in the product and we would be keeping it local."

Kennedy and his group are looking for 100 people willing to pay $500 each to become co-op members.

There are concerns users of medical marijuana who have been growing their own supply may not be able to afford the drug under the new federal system.

Now this is an idea I MIGHT be able to get behind.

I thought that this could work as well in the sense that centralized buildings could be set up,in larger centers...
where medical patients share compartmentalized space,in a properly zoned and secure building.
The co-op aspect would be that all of the customers(patients and or caregivers) would also be employees for the larger company...who
owns the building and licence for the business...under the New program
Picture a very large storage type building with individual stalls, where the cust/employee would be able to grow their own meds while co-operatively sharing the cost of the space and and electricity, water,security,etc...
The customers would be bound to the same shipping, storage ,principals of the program(MMPR),and the co-op would have acting QA person,to share ,and testing would be available etc...
If the buildings were on bus routes and were easily accessible to the employee/cust, so their crops could be tended as they see fit..
on and on.......

seems like so much work though to be able to keep growing for yourself....but at least this type of methodology would allow for a person
to still grow and as cheaply as possible under the New reg's....
without having to become millions in debt....
someone good with the numbers could probably figure how many units it would take to break down
the costs into a manageable portion....

I like the idea because I would still be in somewhat in control and that's what it boils down to.

I've heard rumblings in the news of a few different co-op type LP's trying to get licensed. I don't know how they are going about it and what the regulations allow as far as this type of thing but I think it is a good option for some patients and definitely warrants some further investigation. Meds for the people, by the people!

control is also a huge factor for me too....
A co-op this was my first thought....back when... I was thinking if you can't beat them....join them.....but truthfully
I'd rather beat them....and grow here at home .. out of convenience ,simply cause as my condition's have progressed,
I have become too tired to do much more than I am now.....
