need to find an old record player.......... go ahead ask why

A little bit of a side trip here, but I have been setting up my little grow tent with a "CFL Dome" of lights, that is the normal overhead on chains set up with adjustable height (built from a no parking sign btw) and then 4 additional cfl's (right now 2x45 w and 2x26 w ) cradling a square around the entire base and sides of the plant. this has been working well, but I like to turn the pot every day or so by about a quarter turn to make sure everyone gets whatever kelvin is at each side (you need to envision that the sides are on a round pot- then it sounds understandable :-) ) and of course, the hope that any places being missed by the last turn will be found by light in the next turn. yes yes! you see where I am headed? I am going to find a turntable to goof about with and rig up an automatic spinning device (hoping to attain 6 revolutions per hour). I know right you are saying "that old man has been hitting the mason jars again" be cause they have movers for lights themselves. ahh but I have a little grow tent and no such budget or space for such incredible technology (mounting a mover and needing to keep it as adjustable as CFL needs to be, just doesn't work out in the wash for me. So instead I am going to try to spin the world for my little girl as opposed to trying to spin the sun, which I am unable to do... you can check my journal to see the dome lighting but if you want to know more than "CFL Dome", as if that is not self explanatory enough please ask, I am pretty ripped and would love to talk all about it ..... to anyone...........seriously anyone :-) j/k but I will let anyone interested know how this works out

I've thought of this idea myself ages ago.. but I'm not so sure an old record player is going to be able to support the weight of a full pot of dirt and plant on top of it..
If you're familiar w old record players you will know that it doesn't take much weight to stop the table from turning as it's only driven by a crap motor and small belt system..
I love the idea but not sold on a record player working... they did have this system similar to what you're considering called something like the r.p.m. system that is pre-built and also looks pricey as balls..
If you're the diy type I'm sure you could come up with some kind of motor and table system much like a record player but one that could take the abuse And weight both..
I'll be following along to see how you make out though..

the record player wont have enough torque to do that. what you want is a rotating display case for watches or ones for alcohol/wine bottles. they cost a pretty penny though but the wine/alcohol bottle ones ca turn a lot of weight and can be adjusted for speed i believe.

Its a cool idea tho don t get me wrong...just completely unnecessary. ..imo and experience

i bought a high torq motor and wired it to a small solar panel to turn it. right now i am just figuring a way to gear it to the appropriate rpm and will see how this works. More of a curiosity since i have plenty of light.

Just had a brain storm.. one of those clay wheel thingys .. like what they use in d movie ghosts.. probably pretty expensive but I'm sure you could used the idea to d.i.y. something similar for way cheaper..

They actually sell them for rotating mannequins, but they are almost $200, which is a little past where I draw the line for idle curiosity(at least this one).

you could ask patrick swayze to turn it for you ;)

Its a stupid idea and your a lunatic but it just might work, try using a donut turntable to take the weight.

went with an old record player platter (which fits the pots I use perfect, and attached the belt drive to a larger electric motor, works well in beta just need to move it to my SJ now and see how it works. pics when I install it. as for completely unnecessary etc well to be factual anything beyond throwing the seed in the dirt outside and letting it do its own thing is unnecessary as that will grow the plant, so everything else over and above that is extra attention, of which you can decide what you will od and I will decide what I will do, but neither set of actions is truly necessary. well that and this is a hobby for me , so why not make it an enjoyable one? just saying :-)
