Need help positioning 150watt HPS!!

I need some help from the RIU community. I'm on my first grow, and have recently switched my lighting to 12/12 to reveal sex and start flower. I am currently running 11 23watt 2700k cfls and 2 24watt t5ho fluoros. My space is very limited, and i was wondering if it is possible to mount my hps vertically. The ballast is built into the fixture, which I think might present some issues regarding hanging. I don't know if it was designed to sit like that, and the last thing I need is a fire hazard!

I've attached a picture to give some reference. The ballast is beneath the slotted vents behind the socket and is not removable.

Again, my question is can I hang this fixture vertically instead of horizontally?

Thanks!

The lamp itself might not be able to run vertically without exploding or wearing out too fast.

You can take it apart, you just have to drill out the rivets if they didn't use screws. You could use an extension cord and wirenuts to make it a remote ballast, but you really should know what kind of lamp you're working with first.

If it is a vapor tight light with a jar and cage over the bulb it should be mountable in any direction . On the bulb it will be stamped hor. Ver. Alluse. Something like that ..but im pretty sure those vapor tights can be used in anydirection with the included also security lights are made to be pointed at things so they are usually universal mount bulbs too. In fact most 150hps i have seen if not all were able to be mounted any way:)

Thanks userfriendly and winkdogg! It seemed the logical answer was to just move the cfls vertically and run the hps the way it was mant to be. I did some reorganizing of my limited and space and somehow made it all fit without have to turn any (which is good, because I don't know how I would have mounted them). I only need to cram in one more 65watt cfl and I'll be golden. I included a couple pics...

Thanks again guys!

good thing you left that light the way it was:) they are supposed to be mounted that way! i thought you were talking about a cheapy homedepot light but you have done a great job with the space provided:)

they look happy and healthy that is the plan!!

Yeah, I made it fit, so its a moot point now. Just checked out your journal winkdogg, nice job on the grow! I'm working with roughly the same amount of light you had, plus the 150watt hps, so your journal is kind of a reference guide to check my progress...except its 100 pages long! +rep for starting a 100 plus page thread!

And thanks for the tip smokey, i've been pretty good about not letting them grow into the bulbs (the cfls don't hurt them too much) and the hps is high enough I shouln't ever have to worry about it. Your plants look sweet too. Next time I'm definitely going to seek out some quality strains like yours!

Sucks about downsizing...hard to get those nice lights in there, I know. Having used cfls for most of the way on my grow, I think they are the way to go (at least for veg). They don't create much heat, use very little energy, and are cheap! If you get a lot of them (as you have shown) things can turn out fine. If your space gets smaller, look at it as a challenge--the more light you make fit, the better your results!

Good luck with whatever happens, and keep the community posted!
