if your lucky...possibly on ebay you can find a bluelab truncheon. I saw alot of people recommended it so I purchased one myself. It was $100 brand new but it works like a charm so far.

I hear some recommend Hanna measuring pens.

Budget=no good or wont last long, you get what you pay for. Until ebay came along and then its a different kettle of fish. I got a truncheon for £25 brand new which is roughly $50. You could probably get it shipped over for less than a new one over there. Definitely look on ebay.

Local growshop tried to sell me a Hanna meter for $200... Cheapest meter they had was $125.

Word of advice, stay away meters that have both PPM and PH readings from the same stick. They blow out fast.

yeek!

Hannas are not my idea of top shelf stuff. I killed a few before trying Eutech pH meters, which I've had for many years, with periodic probe replacements of course.

Too right. I am not a fan of integrated pH/nute meters for this exact reason.

pH meters should have a user-replaceable probe. The probes only last about 2 years once you wet them- and they must be kept damp in between uses. Waterproof housings with rubber o-ring seals are a must.
