So I built my little grow box the other day. just one of those 18 gal plastic tubs. painted it white and threw in 5 cfls figured that would be enough for that small space. then I got ready to plant my babies and well I found out we had no dixie cups so instead I grabbed some coke cans, used a can opener to cut off the tops and cut drainage holes in the bottoms. I noticed the cans get a little hot(i should really say warm it deff doesnt burn you fingers to touch them) but i'm not sure if thats a big deal of not. So im just wondering if then cans are okay until my plants are ready to repot. Thanks guys.

I don't see why not. I've seen people use stranger things for pots, so cans will be just fine.

Well, too much heat on the soil is bad - but if they are not hot to the touch then it's fine. An aluminum can isn't a very good insulator, so they won't hold in the heat to the point to where it would cause problems.

Don't water too often, just whenever the soil is dried out. Better to give them too little water than too much, IMO.

yeah last time i grew i got all the waterings down
took a while but i was concerned about the heat on the soil
i look into the box like once a day
first time i grew i was obsessed so now im just going for theres plants in a box in my closet big deal
today is the 3rd day and i didnt check them this morning but they werent sprouted yesterday so im just waiting
hard to tell if there is something wrong if theres no plant yet
thanks for the info tho

LOL, I have to do the same thing. When I first started, I was obsessed with checking on my plants ten times a day and giving them water when they didn't really need it, worrying about every little spot on the leaves...

It's hard, but now I manage to keep myself out of the grow room for longer periods at a time - when I spend too much time in there I always end up screwing something up (knocking over pots, lights, etc)

haha yeah that would suck. I think i do have a problem tho, idk if its the cans or to much heat in the box. everytime i look in there the soil is crusted i would think its way to hard for a seed to sprout. Is that a heat issue or just the cans? I think im gonna put in a bigger outake fan, the computer fan just isnt doing it, not sure if i got to weak of a power cord or what but it sucks.
