My plants are top heavy

I have 4 plants. Each about 5 days old in small clear cups. The soil was taken from my back yard. Back in the day, the vicinity my house is in used to be occupied by farm animals, so the soil should be good. I've been looking at pictures of plants as old as mine, and my stems are MUCH longer than theirs (mine are about 3 or 4 inches tall). Still the same 4 leaves, but I can see others barely starting to come in. Anyway.. I'm just using mother nature to let them grow. Sun through the window. I keep it about 65 - 70 degrees on the plants depending on how cold or hot it is outside (there's a hole in my glass window). They seem to be healthy, but I have to use a skewer to keep them from drooping. Any advice on how to keep the stems short? Or is that just the genetics of the type im growing?

I'm saying without seeing a pic that they are strecthed from not being directly under a light or not directly out side. Get you some 42w cfls and they should do awesome.

You can pick some cfls up at lowes or home depot for like 6 or 7 bucks a peice, then get you a couple build a lamp kits so you can have an outlet to hang the lights. Shouldn't cost you more than 25 30 bucks. Or if you have some old table lamps lying around not being used just cut the cord take out the outlet splice the wires and vwalah you have a set up outlet. thats what I did for two of my outlets and the other one I bought and set up.

Yup they are stretching so you are gonna have to get more light. If you get CFLs like you were saying then you will want to keep them as close as 1/2 inch from the tops of the plants. Don't worry it will not harm them at all due to the low heat output of CFLs.

I wouldn't go that close there are some myths about heat output for cfls. Mine run pretty hot... especially the big 85watters nothing like the faq said when I was buying it. I would say safe distance is about an inch man. Might just be my experience with them.....

Thanks for the advice guys! Would I just use that light from start to finish? Making a hanging lamp wouldn't be hard either. I have plenty of lamps over here just chillin, plus the goodwill type store down the road has a shit load of lamps for like a dollar or 2.

yep use the light all the way through and chances are you are going to have to change the type of bulb once you start to flower....or when you induce flowering. Read the growfaq up at the top you will find a ton of info
