My morning rant. I'm sure everyone can relate.

Oooo. I was thinking bicycle. I do not know how folks keep these upright in snowy tire grooves. cn

Well, its December now in Alaska. There is about 1-2" of snow on the ground (fairly low for this time of year). The temperature is lower than average, about 0-10F, and the air is dry. This makes for slick highway conditions.

Now, we have a pretty big military base here. Fort Richardson for the US army, and Elmendorf for the air force. Military makes up for a pretty decent percentage of people working up here.

Now, for the last month or so, there have been multiple highway closures due to morons behind the wheel. My rant starts here:

Start suspending peoples licenses when they are involved in an accident on the highway. Now, I've been to the lower 48's and traveled I5, I95, etc. Now, this rant doesn't apply to the lower 48. Highways down there are hectic, confusing, and overwhelming, even for people that live there.

I'm talking highways in alaska, where traffic is minimal, all you need to do is drive to conditions and you will make the trip safely. No, we have these moron cocksuckers on the road, hitting the ditch because they insist on riding peoples asses, or not paying attention, or putting makeup on in the car, or whatever.

I seriously wish they would start suspending peoples licenses when they are involved in accidents on the highway. (unless wildlife was a contributing factor, yes, moose will just randomly run in front of you sometimes). A simple "too fast for conditions" speeding ticket is not enough to make people consider their livelihood when driving down the road. People need to realize that driving is a privaledge (sp?) and not a right. A bad driver is just as much risk as a drunk driver, but your allowed to be a bad driver as long as your stupid, not under the influence of anything.

Don't make the penalty harsh. 30 days license suspended would be nice. 90 for a second offense, 180 for a third. If you cannot make it a point to drive down the highway, which is the easiest, safest roads in Alaska, without getting in an accident..... well, i feel that you should have your license suspended for failure to avoid accidents or creating one. Other drivers shouldn't have to sit on the highway, crawling along at 5mph because some dipshit drove off the road "avoiding an accident" and created their own accident.

In 14 years of driving, and 30 years of living in Alaska, I have only been in the ditch 1 time. It was my own fault, goofing off trying to drift in snow on a side street. Basically driving how I shouldn't have been, but hey, this was 10 years ago. People change their driving habits.
You want to try living in the uk, when it rains everywhere floods, if its windy all the trees blow down, if it snows god help us we have a light snow fall and the schools close the power goes off, the trains come to a standstill their are accidents galore the whole country is in chaos we can't cope with jack shit!

I feel ya.I commute from the valley to Anchortown 6 months outta the year. However suspending the the driving rights isn't realistic. To many would lose their jobs/houses/apts etc.
Alaska is just to full of people that think they are all that counts and screw the rest(*extrovert)
I've lived in almost every state there is. Anchoreuga has by far the worst roads in the winter by far. Sumthin about that ice build up

  • btw I'm a truck driver for 20 years now.I avoid Anch at all costs(even quit jobs)

different regions should have special options in driver's ed that simulate likely local weather conditions. a lot of schools have skid classes, which are great, but there should be genuine simulations available to mimic icy roads, snowy roads, oil slick roads, hydroplane conditions, etc. going through it in a controlled environment makes a big difference when you encounter it in an actual driving situation. even if it's expensive, it should be mandatory for habitual idiot drivers instead of the silly class that everyone sleeps through.

alaskan drivers are fucking stupid! being from cali it sickens me that they let these people drive, and its a state wide thing, doing 70+ in a 55 with ice on the roads, passing on the edge of the roads, high beaming constantly and i mean constantly, i see like 1 out of 100 cars go to low beams, ive already been in an accident up here, my buddy was driving his car and we turned and some old lady was doing 60 in a 35 and front ended us and first thing she said was "how did you not see me?" my response is well there was a sun spot (these get crazy intense) and where we turned was a straight away from like 2 miles, how the fuckdid she not see usturn in the middle of the road? also no skid marks from her and had my buddy turned the car even a second more i would have been dead, so close to t boning my door. i wasnt driving btw, my buddy and i were 20 ft from our destination and we got hit.... i missed out on a blunt, hash, and pizza hut buffet cause of her..

No no. I can consistently drive faster than the speed limit. I have never been in the ditch to prove that statement. I would fully be willing to have my license revoked if I hit the ditch. You can bet money I was doing something wrong in the first place to end up there.

either way these people up here are in constant accidents, being from cities with 1m+ people there isnt nearly as many accidents, i see accidents everyday here between talkeetna to anchorage, always 1 atleast. also theres no excuse for driving fast like that, your just putting yourself and others in harms way, many other people in the states can say the same thing but all it takes is one "unlucky" day.

We have horrible drivers because of the idiots up north that come here so we get the blame. Not saying northerners are all bad drivers, but you know...
