My morning rant. I'm sure everyone can relate.

Well, its December now in Alaska. There is about 1-2" of snow on the ground (fairly low for this time of year). The temperature is lower than average, about 0-10F, and the air is dry. This makes for slick highway conditions.

Now, we have a pretty big military base here. Fort Richardson for the US army, and Elmendorf for the air force. Military makes up for a pretty decent percentage of people working up here.

Now, for the last month or so, there have been multiple highway closures due to morons behind the wheel. My rant starts here:

Start suspending peoples licenses when they are involved in an accident on the highway. Now, I've been to the lower 48's and traveled I5, I95, etc. Now, this rant doesn't apply to the lower 48. Highways down there are hectic, confusing, and overwhelming, even for people that live there.

I'm talking highways in alaska, where traffic is minimal, all you need to do is drive to conditions and you will make the trip safely. No, we have these moron cocksuckers on the road, hitting the ditch because they insist on riding peoples asses, or not paying attention, or putting makeup on in the car, or whatever.

I seriously wish they would start suspending peoples licenses when they are involved in accidents on the highway. (unless wildlife was a contributing factor, yes, moose will just randomly run in front of you sometimes). A simple "too fast for conditions" speeding ticket is not enough to make people consider their livelihood when driving down the road. People need to realize that driving is a privaledge (sp?) and not a right. A bad driver is just as much risk as a drunk driver, but your allowed to be a bad driver as long as your stupid, not under the influence of anything.

Don't make the penalty harsh. 30 days license suspended would be nice. 90 for a second offense, 180 for a third. If you cannot make it a point to drive down the highway, which is the easiest, safest roads in Alaska, without getting in an accident..... well, i feel that you should have your license suspended for failure to avoid accidents or creating one. Other drivers shouldn't have to sit on the highway, crawling along at 5mph because some dipshit drove off the road "avoiding an accident" and created their own accident.

In 14 years of driving, and 30 years of living in Alaska, I have only been in the ditch 1 time. It was my own fault, goofing off trying to drift in snow on a side street. Basically driving how I shouldn't have been, but hey, this was 10 years ago. People change their driving habits.

Shoot, I always wondered how a dumbass could wreck in the rain. Until I was in Fort Lauderdale, FL and the rain was pooring so hard that I couldn't see much past 25mph with the wipers going full speed.

Needless to say, that was a trip. But I get it now, it simply doesn't rain in Alaska the same way it rains in the states.

Oh, it doesn't have to rain that hard for someone to find a telephone pole. I think if a bird pisses in the right place around here, pileups ensue.

Well, they should start suspending people's licenses. Get in an accident? Sweet, take the bus for 30 days. Do it again, you can be on the bus for 90 days. I'm not sure about you guys, but I've served both 30 and 90 day license suspensions, and the 30 is a drag, but it comes and goes. 90 days is a pain.

Shit, all that would do would up the number of people driving on suspended licenses and uninsured, wreaking more havoc. There is no answer to the human equation.

EDIT: If they would implement driving simulators in driver ed. with real world conditions and crash scenarios, that could go a long way. Instead, all you really have to do is know how to make a u-turn and you pass nowadays. And know what a sign that you will never look at again after the test means.

Right, but if your caught driving while license is suspended, 10 days in jail is mandatory. Do you wanna go there? I don't. Not over driving a vehicle.

Then our jails become even more crowded. The only half-ass solution is cars with un-hackable auto-pilot, or bikes for everyone.

yay rants :) well hope it all gets better and you feel better for getting it off your chest

16 and 66 should be the age bracket for driving (in my opinion). Anything lower or higher, just poses a big risk.

I've put up all my life sharing the road with the 80+ age set. One day it will be MY turn and I do not want to be shorn of it. It's bad enough having grown up calling adults Mr. This and Mrs. That, and not getting my dues now. Pfff and hmpf. cn

I did. Twice even. Each attempt led to an EDV. cn

*Embarrassing Departure from the Vertical.

If you weren't showing off, things like that could be avoided.
