In the totes I decided to go with about a 40/60 perlite/coco mix. I drilled holes in the bottoms for runoff and lined it with 2" of Hydroton, then set them on their lids to use as drain pans.20181111_060714.jpg 20181111_012401.jpg

I used to grow alot of veggies, herbs and flowers inside for fun. Just a tip, don't try broccoli. I babied one for like 4 months under a 1000w mh with fancy weed nutes and ended up with one small head of broccoli that tasted exactly like from the store lol

Basil is really easy and you can clone it to start fresh again. I remember really liking calendulas indoors too they bloomed all the time.

Just for fun I'm going to do watermelon and cucumber, too.

I tried cucumbers outside, and Just didnt really get them to vine very well. I was a total amateur though, and still am. I planted a few plants inside, and now I'm pulling down more cuces than I can pickle and eat!

Its been a great experience. I would like to do a sauce variety of tomatoes, so I can start making my own pizza sauce to put on my scratch pizza crusts.

My cucumbers started out great, but went bad quick. We had a lot of rain over a few weeks including one that was 10" and my soil doesn't drain well, so they never came out of it. Next year I'm digging it out and putting materials in to allow for better drainage. I was also toying with the idea instead of running outdoor hydro in something like a DIY 4" pvc setup with lots of sites.
These indoor cuces are going to be all over the place I think, so that will be fun. I'm also thinking about suspending the watermelons.
I am doing a lot of itailian romas to do canning. Do you have a recipe for the pizza sauce?

Day 6
It's time to transplant the tomatoes. Finally the fun gets to start.

I used coco to sprout them. After the tap root is about 1" long I'transplant them. When the plants get established, this hydroton is small, but at this stage, they are boulders. The small roots need to be touching the hydroton or they will dry out. I sort them out and try to just use the small ones for this part. These are 2" netpots.

I mixed up a week 1 solution at 150ppm pH 6.0 and soaked the hydroton for a few hours so that they can absorb the solution.

I then sat the plant in the hydroton and filled in around it. I put the net pots in a tray and filled it up about 1" with the week 1 solution.

The hydroton will wick this water up and feed the plants, so all I have to do is keep water in the tray. They aren't drinking much right now, so I shouldn't have to do anything to them for a few days.
The roots aren't in the water, they are above it. They are feeding though capillary action from the hydroton.

This is a stage. the next stage is when the roots start to show. I will then move them to 6" net pots. That will be their last pot, and after some growth they will go into the RDWC.
So now we just watch for roots.
Everything else is coming on strong. Still feeding week 1 at 1/3 strength.

suspending watermelons won't work, too heavy, they'll pull themselves off the vine eventually. unless you're growing some kind of dwarf variety
everything looks good, just hope you have a lot of room dedicated to it

watermelon and cucumber both get BIG...just how much room do you have for expansion?
I'm going for my master's in defoliation and HST, lol

I didn't want to say it, but I'm going to do it in a 4x4 with 1000w hps cool tube vented. 4 romas, a bell pepper, anaheim, cucumber and watermelon. 8 plants in rdwc. It does sound nuts.
I'm going to cradle the actual melon in a hanging basket or something. The plan is to get probably two going, get them hanging in a basket, and just keep cutting back just enough growth to grow those two out.
I have 16sqft to work with, and I'm going to use every inch...and more. I plan on trellising up 3 walls, and run a scrog. I'm going to squeeze everything I can out of it. I'll just have to do a little trimming here and there, lol.
It should be fun, that was the idea.
