My First Time Growing

So this is going to be my first time trying to cultivate pretty much anything besides a plant that you water every other day.
I've decided that Hydroponic would be an interesting method and be quick enough to tell if I should keep with it or give another method a try. I only plan to start with 5-10 plants

I need some help being that it is my first time growing, mainly with:
-Germination
-Set up
-How long from seed-matured

Here is my shopping list so far:

Growing Supplies
-Rockwool
-Plastic Seedling Trays

Lighting Supplies
-Light Proof Tarp
-Aluminum Foil
-Masking Tape
-400w HID MH Light
-Appropriate hanging light mount
-Mounting material (ceiling hook,wire)
-Fan
-Ionizer

Hydro Supplies
1x 5gal Bucket
1x Air pump
1x Airstone
1x Airline
1x Water pump 50gal/hr
2x 8-10" 5" diameter PVC pipes
1x 4' rubber hose to fit on the PVC/water pump (3/8")
4x PVC Ends
1x Y Splitter that fits hose
1x 1'ft 1 1/8" tubing
1x White Epoxy based spray paint
1x Black Epoxy based spray paint
4x hose clamps

Nutrients
1x Either a 7/4/3 NPK or 30/15/15NPK bag Hydroponics

I will basically be using my apartment living room as my grow room, going to set up the tarp to block any external light.
Going to use a continuous watering method to give my babies the best chance. With 1 maybe 2 fans and an Iodizer in there with them.

One of my main concerns is the smell, I live in a complex with many neighbors some of which I don't know and just to be on the safe side, would like to keep ignorant of my growing.

Suggestions:
-How large of a grow room
-Will my 2 PVC pipes be able to handle 5 plants on each

Any tricks of the trade really. If you guys can help me out I'll be sure to upload some pictures and let you know how the crop turns out
