I had my T5 a little to close at first as well, better off leaving it a tad high at first.

As far as cheap nutes, I would suggest looking into some teas, https://www.rollitup.org/organics/510995-organic-feeding-101-a.html they can be made with household stuff, plant clippings etc, also banana tea is said to be great for flowering.
But a bottle of FloraNova or equivalent is around 25 bucks, and will last you for a few grows easily. If I was to guess, one bottle will last at least 10 2 plant grows...

As far as smell is concerned there are a few ways to take care of it, if you have an exhaust fan you can put a home made carbon filter on it. I use Ona, I have ona gel that I put about a tbsp in a dixie cup with water ever couple days inside my box, and I have an ona block outside the box. All I smell is ona when its closed up and I have 3 decent sized plants in flower.... They have scented ona as well, I am using unscented, however it has a scent. Kind of like walking into a room that was just cleaned.

Good luck..

PS: the fox farm soil is pretty nutrient rich so you should not have to use nutes for a couple weeks. I ended up burning mine early by introducing nutes a week after I transplanted into the 3gl.
Be sure you have a decent Ph meter as well, keep your water & nute solution around 6.5 and be sure to test the runoff and adjust when needed. Ideal Ph for soil is 6.5..

Thanks for the help,
not 100% sure what the temps are, growing in around a 5x5 walk in closet, when i am running the light i keep the door open 80% of the time besides when part of the time when i am sleeping, but usually wake up in the middle of the night to air it out a bit, whenever i go in there its not to hot, doubt it ever goes above 80-85F and if it does its only for about a hr- normally its the same temp as my room, which ranges from say 65-75 depending on the time of day

20 W yellow light (warm) CFL or 30 W bright white (its not a daylight) CFL for a additional flowering light.

Also, i added another 15 W warm CFL to my plant today at about 4 inches, only going to be running this one for about 8-10 hrs a day during the time i have my grow room door open, because i dont want it to get to hot in there...
