MY first ever grow - Lowryder #1

MY first ever grow - Lowryder #1

Hi guys!
This is my first ever grow so don't be surprised if it all goes tonto. The seeds are Lowryder#1.
I'll probably have loads of questions as I go.

I only just planted a few days ago so not much to report apart from one young lady, "Chives", is starting to poke her head out.
Time to get the other lights setup...

By the way, this site is fantastic - tons of info on AG.

nice clean and simple setup! looks good .
are you keeping them under 20/4 lights?
Good luck dude!
Cheers!
At the moment, I've got it set to "Salad Greens" which is 16.5 hrs on. I've purchased some figure 8 connectors so I'll be wiring up the lights on a separate timer with a CFL at the weekend.

Here's my first question:
AeroGarden Guide/FAQ v 2.0states -
"Seedlings (week 0-2) - NO NUTE TABS!!"

Why is this? What does the plant live on for the first 2 weeks?
Does adding Nute tabs during in this period harm the plant? or is it just a waste of tabs?

Dude get yourself some RHIZOTONIC its not really a fertilizer its a root stimulant and you dont fertilize till the 3rd set of 5 finger leaves usually. The RHIZO will prevent shock, prevent disease etc etc and get your girls off to a fine start. 1 tsp per gallon after sprouts are up

Thanks for the info.
I've just ordered some RHIZOTONIC. I'll give it a go.
Cheers!

for the first two weeks, water and light is all they really need. Nutes are too strong at this point, the young plants arent strong enough to absorb them, and they dont have enough shrubbery to properly use all the nutes, so you end up with a ton of nute in a small area, which causes Nute Burn

Once you hit 2wks, start with a 1/4 tab of the SMALL nute tabs, and work your way up on a weekly basis :)

(coming from a fellow newb who made that exact mistake a few days ago, i gave my girls a 1/2 tab before 2wks, and they started to curl up and yellow)

Ok, it's now a week later. I won't be giving up my day job as I now realise I'll never make it as a professional Aerogardener!:?

Anyway, I've put an 'air-curtain' in the reservour. I figured it would give me more length than an air-stone but is also very flexible.
I connected up a CFL. I'm using the Aerogarden on its 16.hr cycle and the CFL on about 19hrs.
And I've added some Rhizotonic...

Today I noticed that Chives and Mint have a bit of a yellow tinge to them. I figured I might have over-done it on the Rhizo so I emptied out half of the reservoir a replaced with fresh water. I'm hoping they'll be recovering tomorrow?

Thyme doesn't seem to be doing very well at all...

Any further advice anyone????

Oh dear!!!
Things seem to be going from bad to worse!
Young Miss Mint is starting to get little brown spots on her! Ms Chives isn't looking so good either.
Should I empty out the reservoir? and put plain water in??
Or maybe it's the heat? We've just had the hottest day of the year here in UK and I put the Aerogarden in the attic space last week.
I checked the temp and it peaked at 87.6F

I've decided to turn off the big CFL while we've go warm weather as that give out a bit of heat.

Please help.

It's now a couple of weeks later. It's still not looking good! In fact, it's now gone from worse to worsererer.
In order to see if lights are the problem, I put a seed in a pot and left that on the AG. Also it makes me feel better that the lighting isn't going to waste. She is doing really well. Maybe she could give a bit of advice to the other 3?

This is a great learning experience for me. I wll persevere...

You wait and see - my journal #2 will be amazing!!!

Definitely clear the res and use plain water, looks like either Nute Burn or something worse. In any case, definitely can't go wrong with straight H2O!

Also, and this may be off, but it looks like your lights are a bit high, the plants seem to be stretching a bit.
And for 2 week since last pic update, growth looks quite slow. Go with lower lights(1 notch), and pure water for a 1 week or so, it should improve!

(Disclaimer: I am also a first-time grower, so take anything I say with a grain of salt, or a bong-pack of chronic. That said, I've seen some similar issues in my grow, hence the random advice :) )

Hi Leova,
Just had a quick look at your grow journal - Very sad. Yours looked like it was going so well. You must be really gutted that they all died . At least you know where it went wrong. Have you started a new grow yet?
Thanks for the advice.
Actually, great minds think alike! - I emptied out the reservoir last week and left if for a week without nutes. I've only just put nutes back in! However, it didn't seem to help (yet)
As for the height of the hood, it is a little bit high so that the CFL and reflector can fit in at the front.
Also my control Lowryder doesn't seem to have any problems - nice and short.
If you have any more ideas, please keep them coming.

yeah, the sight of my dead girls totally fucked up my day, and much of the next couple days as well

Just planted a few more seeds yesterday, hopefully I can keep from screwing up this time!

I look forward to reading your new journal.
Good luck!

Next problem! -
My AG pump is now making a sort of grinding noise (it used to be almost silent)
Is this normal?
Is there a simple fix to this??

I'm starting to see more green appearing on the plants (bout time too!!)

The healthiest of the 3 seems to be "Tiny Tyme" - I'd given up on her the other week.

Here's pics.

Even though my plants are still very small I think it's possible to just about make out the sex of some of them:

Here's some close-up pictures.

Are those pollen sacs on Chives?

As for mint, I really can't tell. I suspect male??

Finally, isn't it ironic that the crapiest of the bunch turns out to be the girl!
I think this is a girl...

Please advise!
