so i bought a vortex fan the other day to help with my venting situation, and in doing so i figured i'd need a carbon filter since the smell was headed into the attic. right now, i don't need it but i'd rather have it. i built this before taking the pictures. so you'll have to bear with me as i try and describe what i did the best i can. this is also my 1st diy thread so i hope everyone can follow it easily.
all this can be bought at home depot or lowes, except the pantyhose and carbon.
you'll need a little duct tape (not entirely necessary but it keeps the runs in the pantyhose down).
a small box of sheet metal screws.
2 - 8" clamps, or 4 - 4" clamps connected like mine.
a 6" end cap.
an 8" end cap.
a 6" collar.
an 8" to 6" reducer.
24" x 10' 1/4" hardware cloth from home depot.
2 pairs of big assed pantyhose.
a small amount of polyfil.
carbon.
once you've got everything together, attach the hardware cloth (hc) to the 6" end cap. leave a 2" overlap.
next, connect the other end of the hc to the 6" collar. leave 2" of the end of the collar. you'll need the 2" to connect the inner core to the reducer later.
put some tape over the screws to prevent runs in the pantyhose(ph).
cut a leg from a pair of the ph and slide it over the inner core. you can see it here sorta.

now take the inner core and slide it into the reducer. attach with screws, trying to keep it as straight as possible. put a small amount of polyfil in the area between the inner core and the reducer. this prevents carbon from getting into the fan, or leaving the filter.

you can see the collar in the reducer in this pic.

you can see the screws near the 6" end of the reducer in the next pic.

next, take the reducer and attach the hc to the outside of the 8" end with the screws. you can see the screws poking through the tape.

put some tape over the screws again.
cut the white panty part out of the pantyhose and stretch the waist band, and now 1 wide leg, over the hc. i had to do this twice, 2 pantyhose midriff's to cover the 24" of screen with about 3"- 4" of overlap in the middle.
next fill with carbon.

slide the 8" end cap into the end of the filter.

secure both ends with the 8" clamps.

and the completed filter....

there ya have it....any questions, comments, or improvements are appreciated.
hope someone can use this and it keeps them safe in the process.
