My bulb failed when i was out, what next?

Hello folks,

Just got home and instead of the heavenly glow emitting from my cab, all there was was darkness. Isnt it strange when you are able to type the same word twice in a row and it actually makes sense...anyways I've had a quick look around but cant find the info I'm looking for, hope someone can help.

Here's the question - as I have not been in my cabinet for over 24hours I have no Idea when the bulb failed, assuming the plants have been in total darkness for anywhere between 24-48hrs, can i continue on tomorrow at 'lights on' time by replacing the bulb and continuing 12/12 photoperiod? I'm struggling to articulate this one well, basically do the plants get stressed from an extremely long night period or is just when they have their night cut too short - like when you give them less than 12hrs. They are very close to the end of flowering so I'm not hugely worried but would like to continue on to administer a good, proper flushing.

Change the bulb and get back on schedule. If they stressed, they stressed. Nothing you can do about it other than getting things back to normal ASAP.

I believe they mostly get stressed when their dark period is interrupted with light. Although going days in darkness has got to have effects as well, Many people claim leaving the plant in total darkness a few days before harvest "makes the buds better" I've yet to see any scientific evidence of this but thats what they say.... anyways, I'd just continue on schedule as if nothing happened.

ow far into flush are you? some people will go completely dark for a week of flush to try and push any last resin out of the plants

Yeah i guess so, i think what i should have also mentioned is that I'm really skint so trying to save electricity, and was worried the plants might stall in their tracks after this. Your right though, carrying on fingers crossed, thanks for the reply.

This is what i hope, that the long dark isnt a big a hinderance as an interruption in the 12hrs dark. I've heard of this forced darkness aswell, especially on the 'white' strains. I think there is enough written about it to make it an interresting possibilty. Cheers for the reply, gona keep powering on and see what happens over the next few days.

hey btw if your a spaz like i am in electricity consumption I highly recommend getting a Kill-A-Watt Meter. There like 15bucks on Amazon and all you do is plug things into it and it reads out your current.. current. and how many amps you draw as well as it calculates for you how many kiliwats an hour your using. Pretty cool tool...

If your at the end of the cycle, flushing or not, this is a non-issue. The plants are already at the end. If your a week or two, no more, away from harvest...saving a little electricity will do little if anything to the plants. They should of already produced what they will. A few more days won't make much difference IMHO.

I just gave the first round of flushing 2 days ago, was planning a three-pronged flush over a 1-2week period. So i was contemplating just harvesting tomorrow and not doing the full on flush. But i will just replace the bulb tomo and continue. I too hear of this long forced dark period, I just fail to see how the plants can do much with no light. In my case If I can get the lights on and running I think I'll get more yeild etc. If you want crazy resin, then I think the long dark might hold some secrets :)

I know the things u mean, called smart meters here I think. Yeah I think I could benefit from one of those. Unfortunatly a 400w hps is still a demanding beast 12 hours a day either way, but i get your point.

I have a feeling your right :) Just kind of get panicy when something new goes wrong. The real issue for me was really will the next 1-2weeks provide any benefit for me considering I use a pay-as-you-go electricity meter and the finnancial benefit of turning off my hps is instantly noticable for me, rather than waiting months for a bill. Thanks for reply amigo

I would fix the light, but keep it off and save the electricity in your case. Where I live, there is no such thing as a pay as you go power meter...cell phones yes, but I never heard of a PPU power meter. Don't get into the habit of putting them in the dark early the next grow to save some money more than one week at the very end. Two weeks you get to, IMHO, the borderline where you will start having potency loss. Not a snowballs chance in hell any would Hermie from stress that close to the end...If will be cut down way before any issues could ever show.

from what i have read the 24-48 dark period before harvest, the plant produces mass amount of resin to protect it from its environment without light.. or something of that nature.

The annoying landlords install the 'Prepayment' meters they are actually called here, its to avoid issues with unpaid bills I think. You get a little key thing that you take to the shops and put money on it there. It really sucks though as you get charged a higher rate for being on one. Not a huge amount more but still. Tys for the replys, these girls have been hermie prone (2 of them are DP Blueberry) so I've already been on strict banana-watch. I'm flushing them again tomo, then I'll be walking into my room, with that different look in my eye. Not the one of 'I'm here to tend to you plants that I love', but the one of 'I'm here to chop you down!'
