That's fine, but you need to cure it in a airtight jar for the smell to really come out. Otherwise, it'll just smell like dry grass or hay.
doing a poor trim job on the leaf will also make it smell like hay. always remove as much leaf as possible, you can make hash with it. lot of people leave the sugar leaf, but i try to trim it all. you want to be smoking the best quality you can, that means more bud, less leaf.
You gotta sweat the bud, so check at least once a day. If they still feel dry, close it back up, but if it starts to feel wet again leave it open for a good 20 minutes. Check them again and if they are crispy feeling again close the jar until the next day. Once you open the jar after 24 hours and they still feel dry they're good to go and you can just leave it shut. You don't want to check them too often because it'll just take longer for the buds to sweat, but you don't want to check it not often enough because you risk mold. If you open the jar and it smells like sweaty feet or something nasty, dump it out on a mesh screen or piece of paper or whatever and let it air dry out fully.

Once everything is nice and dry seal it up and put it in a cool dark place and forget about it. After 3-4 weeks, you'll open the jar and the smell will knock you on your ass.
