I finally pulled the trigger on putting up a small grow op in my attic. I have gathered a ton of information from here so thank you roi for all the shared knowledge.
The first thing I did was get the electrical sorted out. I have 3 different circuits in my grow space now because I will need one for lights, one for the portable a/c and one for everything else. I wanted to make sure I spread out the load evenly.
Next I bought some insulation and installed the floor over it. Because I only have a 30"x30" opening into the attic I had to cut everything into pieces that would fit into the opening and it took some time to do it. Then I put up radiant barrier across the rafters to help seal the room while also providing some heat protection from the Texas summer.
I then made a room inside a room which will give me total control of the environment. I used sheet rock on the rear wall and left about 16" between the front of the house and the new wall so I could put the ballast outside of the room, and the exhaust duct will blow across the ballast so they are not baking in the summer.
I researched and bought a portable a/c unit that is a bit oversized for the space I will be cooling, but better to go too big than too small. I liked this a/c because if power is ever lost it will come back on go to it's last settings once power is back on. I also like having air being supplied completely free of the rest of the house (smell). It vents out to the rest of the attic through an opening I cut in one of the walls I put up.
I taped every seal, and used some foam spray to fill in any larger gaps that air could get in or out of. Smell is my biggest concern because if people can smell it then I have no choice but to kill the grow immediately and go back to the drawing board.
The a/c blows at 250 cfm and I bought an exhaust fan that sits atop a large carbon filter that pulls 450 cfm to create a nice negative pressure and will take about 3 minutes to cycle the air in the room.
I put up another wall with an access door to what will be the flower room. In the flower room I will have (just need to hang them up and run the ducting) a 1000w hps and a 600w hps. They will be side by side in the space and will ot be brought up or down as I only have almost 5 ft. at the peak of the attic and the room slopes downward to 16" at the low end.
I am using fox farm soil and currently have 9 plants growing in the veg and clone room.
Right now I have an oscillating fan blowing in the room and 2 space heaters with digital thermostats to control the temp. I have a wireless thermometer and hygrometer in the grow room so I can see the temp and humidity in my bedroom.
