Multiple Problems Here - Curling, Yellowing, 4 Way LST Question, Topping

  • Trying to be as detailed as possible, but please let me know if I am missing some information required for diagnosing my issues.

*Disclaimer - Pay no mind to placement of overhead light and fans - That's an older photo just to show you basic setup of mine.*

    Background - Very first grow
    Soil - Roots Organic
ph - Have been giving 6.5 well water (well water ph is 7.9 to start)
pots - Transplanted from dixie cups to 1g pots about a week ago
lights - under 600 watt hps about 2 ft from plants
vent - 450 cfm air cooled hood with carbon filter with 2 fans circulating air on inside
    grow room - 4.5 x 4.5 x 6.5 grow tent
temp/humidity - SEE LOG PHOTO ATTACHED
Nutes - Advanced Nutrients - Have given them 1 watering of nutes about 1/2 gallon split between 6 plants about a week ago: (1ml/gal) Cal-Mag, (.5 ml/gal) Superthrive, (3.5ml/gal) Hygrozyme, (2.5ml/gal) Pure Blend Pro
Additional Notes - SEE ADDITIONAL NOTE PHOTO ATTACHED

Problem # 1 - I'm not sure if I topped this plant correctly as this was my first time topping. Does this look correct?

Problem # 2 - Yellowing leaves, dead almost necrotic like patches on some leaves. A few leaves starting to curl upward. No pests noticed, will check again tonight.

Problem # 3 - Purple stem on Berry Bomb - Plant has 2 curling leaves that are the lowest two and some yellow.

Problem # 4 - I am trying to attempt a 4 way LST followed up with a SCROG, however I'm still a bit confused on when to top. Also should I start my LST (bending and tying down) now?

Problem # 5 - One of my plants is trying to grow to the side. I am assuming it's roots are jacked up some how.. How can I get this thing growing upright again?

    Thanks guys.

They don't need any nutes for about a month after transplanting into fresh soil. Roots is very good, lay off the nutes! Good luck with your grow, I like your attention to detail, it will pay off for you!

Thanks for the info man. Yeah, I heard very good things on roots that's why I picked it over Fox Farm Ocean Forest. Going to take your advice and back off nutes for a little bit. Would I be okay to still give it a shot of Superthrive or AN Liquid Karma? Or the Hygrozme to prevent root rot? Or cut out all nutes completely?

Also thanks for the compliment. I really hope so. I've invested a little over 2k into this grow and I'm not expecting for a perfect grow my first go around, this is more like my test run to learn from my mistakes :)

Giving your plant fresh soil is like loading up a heaping plate at the buffet line. They have plenty to eat for now and nothing good will come from force feeding them more, only problems. Root rot is really not a concern anymore unless you are drenching them everyday and not letting them dry a little between waterings. Your biggest problem with this grow is going to be you wanting to do too much for them. We have all been there.

Leaf tips that curl up are often a sign of heat stress. Leaf tips that curl down are often a sign of over-feeding.

Your topping can be done about another cm higher next time but looks okay. You want to avoid damaging the node sites where the next set of shoots will come out. There is nothing to LST at this point, you need your top shoots to come out about 6 inches first.

The plant growing sideways can be propped up with a stick or something and it will straighten out.

Keep taking those notes and you will really shorten the learning curve!

Any idea on the cause of this?

Well I flushed 2 with 2 Gallons of distilled water each with a ph of 7.0 - then 1 of them i just put back as is, and the other I put 1ml cal-mag, 1.5 mil superthrive and a ph of 6.5 and gave it 1/2 gallon of that and going to see how both look tomorrow to see which one shows more improvement.

I failed to mention my runoff has been 5.5 - after messing around with mixing tonight, I discovered the superthrive was shooting my ph down from 7.0 to 5.5 (of course I failed to check ph after adding it before) - This would explain a lot..

For this reason would you recommend flushing all 6 plants?

I'd not stress to much for now, just continue watering with the corrected PH water, and lay off the nutes for a while, you will see results.

Cut off the moisture/nute burned nodes. They were pretty bad. 20140329_211938.jpg

Trainwreck has made an awesome recovery. 20140329_210931.jpg

As for the others they are doing well since the 7.0 distilled water flush. Once they dry out now that they've been flushed like crazy I may flush again and give them their first real dose of nutes. Will see how they react over the next few days before that of course.

If you have healthy growth going now, why would you flush it again? Flushing is stressful to your plant. A seasoned grower will be patient and keep them on water until they show signs of needing nutes.

It look's good to me, just be patient. I don't usually cut leaves off that early but what ever. You got this, your detail will pay off. I think though right now less is more.

Yeah, a lot of people say less is probably better at this time. And as previously stated by another guy the biggest problem I will face is wanting to do too much for my babies. I am now realizing that.

I keep feeling like I am so behind on where they should be. Mainly because of all the issues I've ran into on my first grow. (I guess it could be a hell of a lot worse)

Seeds were dropped in soil after germination on March 3rd. So they've been in ground for 27 days now.

I will try to ease off a bit. I really do appreciate all the advice on here.

Had no clue flushing was that stressful on a plant. Thanks for that bit of info man.

I plan on turning this into my first grow journal within the next week or two. So I'll drop a link for that when it's up as well.
