Moving and transplanting plants

As I posted recently, some of the plants in my auxiliary garden are getting weird twisted leaves. Looks like "The Claw" but it surely is not nitrogen toxicity. It's unimproved, bentonite-y soil. (Bentonite is what cat litter is made of, it's a thick, heavy soil and when wet it's described locally as "owl shit" as it's thick and slippery. The kind that pulls your boots off when you walk in it.) The plants perked up and started more rapid growth after a dose of Miracle Grow, which, since they're in vegetative growth, has more nitrogen than the other two elements. I gave them the Miracle Grow AFTER I noticed the weird growth.

So, since I have room in the vegetable garden (where six mj plants are waist high and happy, and the soil has been mulched and improved for years) I want to transfer the bushiest (most likely female) plants to there. I intend to dig a deep hole for each one, add some even better soil, and water it. Then dig up each plant with its root ball intact, and carefully set them in the good soil. Is there anything else I should know or do? I have many plants so losing one isn't going to kill me. I know I'll have to pull half when they show their sexes. If the transplanted ones fail, I can try again. Thanks in advance.
