Mother Plants & Cloning

Hello

For my next grow I would like to keep a mother and use cloning, but I have a few questions.

How do you select the mother plant? I guess you have to pick a plant that is vegging and wait till it shows female preflowers?

How big will the mother plant be? Is there a way to keep it small? (as I would prefer it if I could keep it a small height).

From where on the mother are the cuttings taken?

How long will the mother last?

Do rooted clones need to be vegged further?

there is a lot of information on cloning...just use the search field.....Mothers can be kept short and bushy by training them...when you cut clones there will be new shoots and new branches so you will have to prune it to keep small....mothers can live forever if you take care of them...Once you have viable root system you can send them right to flower, I prefer one to two weeks myself of veg time. to select a mother, grow up some seeds...once you are foot tall take some cuttings and clone them....once rooted, send to flower...look for female traits......one you get a female you will now have a mother.....

I am no expert in cloning and still learning myself, but there is a lot of information on here about this...youtube has MANY tutorials on cloning and the different ways to do it.

I read lots of information on how to clone, but I'm trying to understand the whole process and still have a few questions:

So you mean take cuttings from your foot high plants before you know what sex the plants are? So all the clones you produce could be male or female? I thought you would be able to take cuttings from a female plant in veg, so then you know the cuttings will all be female.

So to get your mother plant you have to put it in flower to tell sex and then put it back into veg for the rest of its life? I thought it never went into flower and you had to select it from its preflowers in veg?
 
Now this is just my own experience, some may say production and potency will diminish, but not mine;

Once I know I have a female, I take cuttings and clone 5-6
I usually have 100% success ratio but I may lose 1 once in a while

then I grow those clones till moving to 12/12

and before I move them I clone them, hence no mother.

1 of my strains is 3 years old and has been clones of clones about 15 times with no diminishing of grams or potency:bigjoint::bigjoint:

So long story short the mother is long since chopped and smoked but she lives on in her clones of clones of clones of clones of clones of clones!!!

I love this idea - so the clones have enough growth for you to be able to clone them, and let them root while your clones are flowering? This would be great for me if I can save the space needed for a mother and just go clone to clone.

exactly, just let the rooted clones grow for like 2-3 weeks then cut clones of the clones!



Now why didn't I think of that! :wall:

hey thats a pretty good idea, if ya ever get tired of the strain you could just pop some seed :bigjoint: I think i might try this and get rid of my mother room:-P

if you grow from seed you can get male or female, to wait for pre-flowers we all dont have that option....to sendd a plant into "force" flower to find your females and then back to veg is stressful and % goes up for hermied plants.....IF you take a clone and flower it, if it is female then you now have your "mother" if its male then you chop the main plant......less chance of male plant showing and dropping pollen in your grow room.

I do like the other idea though

i never realized keeping moms was a hassle. seeds are a hassle, clones are easy. idk just my opinion. i just replace my moms with one of their cuttings every so often but then again space is not a concern for me. moms live despite you and if your clones take a shit then you just got kinda screwed. well delayed at the very least. with moms right there you have a bigger margin for error. not downing anyone, just sayin'
