Mother plant help.

Hey you with knowledge!

So I am planning out my first grow indoors, and I have searched google and the forums for the answer so hopefully people wont flame me for asking a repetitive question.

I want to get small grow of 2-3 plants going, harvest 2 initially and take the best one as a mother, and immediately get 2 clones going and repeat this process.

So I want to know can I keep it all in one room with the same lights?

I'm unsure if the light cycles will affect the mother/ she will get to big.

Basically what effects will keeping the mother after flowering and putting into cloning light cycles.

Measures I can take or Techniques to keep the height in check (if its going to be a problem).

Also, if you have any suggestions for a nice overall sativa or mostly sativa for beginners it would be appreciated.

Thanks for your help, it is truly appreciated. I love this forum, and it's wealth of information.

so your saying your planning on flowering the mom with the other plants then taking clones from it??? cause if that's the case don't. flower your other plants only. as soon as u put them in flower take clones from the one ur using for a mom. keep the clones and the mom in veg on 24hrs or 18/6 whatever ur cycle is. and continue that process over and over...

Welcome to RIU :)

Flowering and vegging need to be in two different areas due to lighting schedules. There is a little more involved with choosing a mother plant. First you need to ID if its a female, then you need to choose your best female and keep her in a veg state so you can continue to grow her and take cuttings from a known strain.

Thanks for the welcome and the advice!

Although my post count begs to differ I am not a complete noob, I have been lurking for some time, and am taking the time to carefully plan out my fist op.

I know about cycles and flowering and everything, I'm just curious as to why I can't flower my mother plant and take clones? I want to keep the grow as small as possible and setting up a different area/room for only my mother/clones seems like a bitch.

Or even flower the mother then send back to veg cycle and then get clones? What happens if you do that?

I appreciate your answers immensely.

Theoretically, you can take cuttings from a flowering mother, however, it will take some time to get the cuttings back into a vegetative growth stage. Clones taken this way need to be nurtured and your success rate won't be as good.

The mother needs to be kept in a vegetative growth state so she bushes and branches from the cuttings, providing new growth to cut for future clones. From the three that you have, you need to identify sex, then select the best plant for the mother. If you are using feminized seeds, sexing shouldn't be a problem.

Thank you for clearing that up serapis.

How long (on average) does it take for a mother to go back to a vege state?

Maybe I shouldn't start with a perpetual grow for my first op.
