most horrible noob cab grow

whats up, this is my first time growing. I am growing cannadential and white rhino in 1 gallon pots, fox farm ocean forest soil with probably a lil over 100 watts of cfl. at first the lights were hanging up at the very top and i noticed that the plants were looking like they were stretching, so I put the lights on the side and put boxes underneath the pots. Im planning on using scrog when they get bigger.

if u guys have any tips or suggestions, it would be greatly appreciated.

im kind of concerned for the white rhino, in the second pic it looks like the top stretching upwards big time and it should be bushy
 
Are the lights being held in place by duct tape? Oh man.

Look, people. This is how fires get started. This is how people get caught and loose a lot of things like money, posesions, and freedom. This is what gives home growers a bad name. Seriously. Home growers are known for recycling materials and using thing not for their designed purpose, but the line gets crossed when safety is compromised. This puts more than just you at risk. Your neighbors, and who ever lives in the same building as you. How would you like it if someonehad a destructive accident that in the apartment below you because they didnt take the time to employ some simple safety precautions? Would you curse them for their lack of common sense that led to damage to your property?

Set ups like this should not be acceptable.
 
I totally agree with greensister.

in additon to fire hazard, those cardboard boxes are a breeding ground for mold and mildew when they get wet. plus, they like to tip over, and drop your plant, and pour your soil everywhere.

wow i didnt know that. what do u suggest i use to put up the lights?
 
I use a hardboard box with a pine strip frame, and secure the lights by tying metal cable straps around them and through holes in the box. Then I move the bulbs around the top by suspending with string, but always in such a way that if the string breaks the bulb won't touch anything (the metal cable straps will never break).

Just use common sense and don't leave things to chance. Take care when wiring up your lights, keep water away from electrical sources; so on and so forth.. You know, common sense.

As for your grow, looks like the plants are doing well. If you're just using 100w of CFLs then you will struggle if you intend to grow them very tall. Though I have a foot-tall plant flourishing on three 90W CFLs.
 
Clamp lights are great. Also your cabinet should be made of wood. Cardboard burns so easily and the glues that are used to make it can be toxic when burned. Plus wood is a lot sturdier than cardboard.
Keep all plugs and wires off the floor and keep as much wire out of your grow area as you can. Never use duct, masking, scotch, or mailing tape for electrical work. Use wire caps (you can buy a big ass bag of them at the hardware store for a buck). Electrical tape is for temporary repairs and should not be used for anything perminent.

Wiring a large box with lights isnt a complicated thing, but you will need to spend money on the right equipment. The bulb splitters are fine, just keep in mind that the larger wattage bulbs tend to get heavy and bulb splitters are not the most secure things out there. Make as few wires spices as possible. Every splice is a potential short, shock, or fire. Add up your total wattage and use only wire that has a higher rating than your consumption. Most extention cord wire is good for 700 watts. Do not work with powered wires. Keep everything unplugged. Pay special close attention to not corss any wires. Most extention cords have 2 wires in them. On one part of the wire there should be some lettering embossed every couple of feet. Connect only lettered wire to lettered wire and non lettered wire to non lettered wire. Lastly, dont plug your set up directly into the wall. Use a surge protector.

You can buy the supplies you need at any hardware store and it shouldnt cost you more than $50 and 2 hours-bulbs not included.

For bulbs, you want to keep your wattage around 30 for each bulb. Anything higher and the heat from the ballasts starts to become a problem. More lower wattage bulbs effectively covers more surface area than fewer higher wattage bulbs.

I assume you know you want a higher ratio of cool bulbs (5000+K) to warm bulbs (2700K) for veg and the opposite for flowering. If you decide to take this advice, im sure the readers of this thread would be very interested in what you come up with.

Good luck, and do some research prior to doing things that are potentially dangerous.
 
thank u guys very much for replying. my cabinet is made out of wood, but the back is cardboard.
i had a friend help me out with setting up the cab, but i didnt know about the potential dangers other than odor and electricity bill.
i shouldve made this thread before i got my clones
what do u mean by cool bulbs to warm bulbs?
