If you're traveling on I-10 going either direction you are going to encounter one of these USBP checkpoints. Every single highway leading away from the border has one at some point less than 70 miles from the border in a straight line in most cases.

This is how intense and corny it's gotten.

they actually got a check point on I-91 in vt either between exit 11 and 10 or 10 and 9 its a ways from the canada border but they just ask if your a US citizen but I've seen one person have to go into the rest area probally a canadian. Its kinda stupid you can easly take back roads around the check point and their not always there but most of the time unless its just on the weekends cause thats usally when I go through for family gatherings.

You can't avoid a BP check on any back roads down there. All have USBP checkpoints. Maybe some dirt roads but you can see a dust plume from anything going over 10 MPH on one. Plus enough air surveillance that you ain't beating the southern border when it comes to going north, west or east. Northern border is totally different. Lived in northern MT for years about 15 miles from a small POE. We had the key to the gate that went across the road on the Canadian side to take critical patients to Lethbridge, AB if we couldn't airlift them to Great Falls or Kalispell.
