Nubern: Another possibility might be that you have an algae bloom going in your reservoir. I had that problem a few years ago in my Aerogarden. My roots weren't the expected bright white I like to see and it smelled vaguely like polluted water. If that's your mid-west smell we might be talking about the same thing and you might have an algae bloom. Look for a brown, green or reddish scum accumulating in your reservoir. It's hard to see unless it's really advanced so you might let your nose tell you.
I got good advice from my friends here on how to resolve it: cut off all the light to the reservoir. Light leaking in is all they need with the rich nutrient mixes we use. Dump it and scrub it and one person suggested I use a 10% chlorine bleach solution for the cleaning. I didn't have any bleach so I used our dish washing detergent and a lot of elbow grease and that seemed to do the trick. Refill it with fresh nutes and add a 1/2 teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide per gallon of nutes. The hydrogen peroxide sounded crazy but it worked. Supposedly algae doesn't do well around hydrogen peroxide. I know there was controversy about using the hydrogen peroxide from other growers but it worked for me. Just don't over do it.
