Middle-class Americans getting crushed by rising health insurance costs

"Many people in the mid-range of income distribution don't have very much savings," Collins added. "People may avoid care, but at some point it becomes inevitable."

Unavoidable health expenditures drive others into debt.

For Macon, a mother of two adult children, bills piled up fast. Labs, PT scans, MRIs and oncologist visits quickly chewed through her meager savings.

The barrage of medical expenses meant Macon wasn't able to get her car repaired and now has to rely on friends or charity organizations for rides to medical appointments. She's worried about Christmas next month and whether she'll be able to buy gifts for her family. Staying at home so much, she said, is isolating.

"It's really wrecking my credit," she said of her medical bills. "I'm behind on so many things. I can't keep up with any payments that are being asked of me."

In a few weeks, she'll learn if the treatments she's had are working. If they aren't, she'll have to go on palliative care, a frightening and expensive prospect.

"I do everything I can to try to stay calm," she said. "But all the financial stress, on top of trying to heal, is ridiculous."

This is why we're going to enact Medicare for all. So people like Lee-Ellen Macon, and the 500,000 Americans just like her every year, don't have to worry about going bankrupt or relying on community handouts and gofundme campaigns to pay for life saving medical treatment.

Bernie is making it more difficult to enact a government run health care system.
whose making it less difficult? i haven't heard anything like a workable plan from anyone yet. Biden doesn't seem to have a plan, Warren wants to tax everyone with any money into poverty, Harris wants to rebuild the entire country, with no explanation of how to pay for any of it...and i'm voting for one of these clueless asshats....which isn't inspiring a lot of confidence in the chances of democrats in 2020. they're running against a misogynist, racist, isolationist, lying, ignorant fucking fool...and they can't get behind one person who seems worth a fuck...they better pick someone soon, and that someone better have a platform that isn't fucking insane to stand on.

that is an excellent term...it describes the whole trump clan perfectly, and most of his administration..."failson"....useless parasites with no practical value, leeching others to death to support their outrageous life styles....

I agree and would love to have the highly innovative, pristine, talent filled modern hospitals of our country be fully available and free for everyone that needs them in our country. If we took having to worry about paying for the treatment when sick/injured if you have no resources to pay, humanity would be that much better for it. But it cost Obama his next 6 years getting the ACA (Obamacare) through, and now we are fully under attack. With the Russians pumping out propaganda scaring people about the 'libs' trying to take more from them. People don't understand the difference between 'medicare for all' and Obamacare (when fully implemented) is not much at all (other than the complete destabilization of the medical insurance industry, which is not as good as it seems).

It is more important to take the lay up and not try some slick slam dunk when we are being attacked by the Russians. This is too important to not allow Trump to continue to break things like a bully at a nice spoiled kids house.

There is no reason why people should not be able to buy medicare insurance, the states stopping people from getting access to it need to vote Republicans out. If they are in a position that they cannot afford it, they would automatically get it, we need to get the last 8% of Americans on health insurance (it may be lower since Trump stopped the requirement to have to have insurance).
