Can you pluck off one of the small trichome covered leaves surrounding the bud to check the trichomes? Or do you have to check the bud itself?

Sure you can man take a small sample.

The bud itself. The ones on the leafs aren't always representative for the rest. I cut off small pieces from the middle and the top of the plant. Better to throw away a few crumbs now then harvest too soon.

Start looking at finished plants wherever you can. RIU google images, etc.

I very rarely check trichomes any more.

When its done it looks done!
