MedicGrow Smart 8

Hey all, I got my Medicgrow smart 8 yesterday and hooked it up with some expert help from @CrunchBerries, thanks again brother.
Does anyone have experience with this light?
My question is about the EXT mode, I assume it is for external control but why is that setting sooooo much brighter than the 100% setting. Both settings say they are drawing the same wattage but the EXT is so dramatically brighter.
I am new to LED's, thanks in advance!

Did you get a response to this issue yet? If so what did they say? Thanks!
Yes I did. The built in timer has a default sunrise sunset feature. Takes it about 30 min to rise to full power.
If you bypass the built in timer this does not occur

Awesome, I had to order mine before I heard back from you though ;) With current studies of sunrise and sunset not being beneficial and lowering total DLI, I wish that they mentioned that in there sales. Hopefully you can disable that and still use the timer. I use a separate light controller, so no big deal. Thanks so much for the update.

How are you liking the light so far?

Thanks again,

I have the Fold 8 on 1 side of 4x8. Started using 1 week prior to flip.3 different strains in 7 gallon smart pots using soil. Filled up scrog and are getting quite frosty. Can not compare to anything, its my first time growing, but I think they are a great light. Day 45 flower.20211226_060354.jpg1641302710511_IMG_0943(1).jpgIMG_0942.jpg1641302571089_IMG950941.jpg

@MedicGrow please can you tell us more about the fold vs smart 8 lights and whether the 18 hour or sunrise/sunset modes can be bypassed?
Differences between Medic Grow fold 8 and smart 8
1. Fold 8 is a 720W led grow light that offers V1 fully programmable spectrum;
full-spectrum-medic-grow.jpg
Smart 8 is a 760W led grow light and you can switch the spectrum from vegetative (V1) to flowering (F1) ;
medic_grow_smart_8_flower_spectrum.jpgmedic_grow_smart_8_veg_spectrum.jpg
2. Fold 8 comes with one dimmer knob;
fold8_dimmer.jpg
Smart 8 comes with a dimmer knob, a timer knob and an enhanced 660nm red button;

3. Smart 8 is equipped with an integrated LCD display;
4. Smart 8 comes with built-in sunrise/sunset function(cannot be bypassed as long as you set the timer ).
So, If you bypass the timer, you bypass the sunrise/sunset function.
5. Size - Fold 8

How close to the canopy can you hang the lights (each ones height) thanks
The Fold-8 is quite powerful even at 80%. I've played around with height over two grows and get great results between 16-24 inches, if you try to push it closer you risk some light burn. I usually give them 24 inches and then let the plants grow into them during the first month of flower. Feel free to check out my grow journal, I'm currently using a Fold-8 if you want to see more of it in action.

The level canopy under the Smart 8 vs the SE and DE bulbs is almost enough of a reason for me to replace them. Ill get a better review after I see them in action a little while longer. Thanks again @BeagleZ for the info!

Does this model have an internal clock so if it loses power it doesn't force you to be there at your plants sleep and wake times to reset the light and avoid double sunset/sunrise issues?

And what's with the $210 postage to Australia? With respect, the savings and ease of everything until getting hit out of nowhere with a freight charge that high has made me reconsider purchasing the Smart 8 as this wipes out most of the savings over a similar light with meanwell drivers and free postage. Its typically $30-60 maximum for any other lighting manufacturer trying to gain market share online.

Does anyone know of similar lights that are half the width of these? Also, how hot do they run? Do they require ventilation and heat dissipation?
The closest alternatives are usually more expensive, especially for US purchasers, but the Migro Aray panels are good and smaller form factor.

They're all standard LEDs - they'll get hot to touch and warm the local air but some grow rooms need heating that used only to be cooled under HPS. They've got built in heatsinks but you do need a few " of clear air around all sides, as per any light fitting.

After commenting above I felt it best not to say negative things without giving the company a chance to demonstrate the worth of their product and processes. We placed an order for 2 lights on 3rd February with shipping to Australia included and quoted at $210USD.

After taking payment through PayPal your system errored and didn't give us an order number, or even a payment reference.

We twice contacted you using your online form, and got Kitty. Kitty doesn't say much (she actually says the same thing each time). She doesn't get back to us. After contacting you with the PayPal payment reference and gateway screenshots at our end which show payment has taken by Comdevi Electronics Co Ltd (which looks to be a holding company based in Hong Kong, related to an entity in China. There's a bit of a lack of transparency here, and if a US customer is expecting a light with a warranty sold from a US company (MedicGrow?) then offshoring the payment potentially means they have no US-based rights.

So, you got back to us asking for the payment reference. We told you we'd sent what we had and Kitty got back to us.

Instead of being asked to pay the quoted shipping fee on the website of $210USD, ($289 AUD) we were quoted a shipping fee of $300+ ($438 AUD), which we paid.

We finally saw some progress. On Friday we were told the lights would be shipped this week. Today (Wednesday night time, we were again emailed by Kitty to tell us we had to pay another $220, now to Growponic, Inc using SWIFT routing (International Bank Transfer), to the US company that owns the MedicGrow trademark.

While I understand shipping volume is expensive in times of COVID-19, if you're shipping them ex Asia it should be cheaper than shipping ex-United States. If you aren't, it feels like you could investigate that option.

At this point it's 3 weeks after an order was placed and it hasn't been dispatched yet. We've paid $100USD more than quoted and now been asked to pay more money, apparently because while you failed to process the order the cost of shipping went up.

Current companies in the market from Spider Farmer to Fluence are known for 'American' standards of customer service. At this point, the purchase experience for us has honestly instead been identical to that of a honeypot scam.

I'm not telling you how to resolve this, but at this point my questions about this light remain unissued on the forums. My own company would have sunk/eaten the costs, thrown in the lighting controller for goodwill and hoped that the customer told people they had an overall good experience and the after-sales service earned another 10 or 1,000 lights - you have no idea whether I have a 1' x 1' tent with tomatoes or am trialling lights for a new medical cannabis facility.

Finally, you're now using the term "freight" instead of shipping. It's disappointing as this takes delivery from a point to point transaction to one where, presumably, if two lights get stuck at a port it could turn into my issue? Or is that not what you/Kitty meant?

Lastly, can we have some information about who MedicGrow are please? We're not all racist and we're aware that the pricing means not having a Good Ole Boy sales rep with an office in every state.

I apologise for taking this into the public domain but given the kind of issues here I thought how you resolve this might inform other potential purchasers of the current ordering issues. We thought purchasing a light from your website would give us landed lights to test within three weeks. Otherwise we'd have walked into another hydro store or bought from your competition. You'll be aware that no facility or even consumer wants these kinds of issues when yield and PPFD are so closely correlated.

thanks,

stonedfood.

It sounds like people outside of the usa are having major shipping cost issues. Ide say for the time being if your outside of usa the shipping costs may not be worth it.

I own this light and just recommended it to a couple of friends. IN LIFE YOU'RE ONLYY AS GOOD AS YOUR WORD! MEDICGROW quoted a price , you paid and now they want to change the terms? Defines the term, Shady! Not good business. Even if the company lost money, it was their price that they negotiated. It should be honored. I understand that a employee may ,drop the ball, and doesn't necessarily represent the company as a whole. Now that these issues have been brought to light, pun intended, I hope to see original terms honored. They have a Great product, nothing but good things to say about the quality and value. The warranty was a good selling point also. Seeing your issues is troubling. It makes me question if my warranty would be honored? I don't anticipate any problems but you never know. Hopefully bringing it up to the online representatives, will get you a swift resolution. Please let me know how it turns out? When they fix this , I think you will be very happy with the lights performance, and the company's. Giving them the benefit of doubt. PEACE

Will do, and thanks for the feedback. Given that Growponic, Inc actually exists it's a good sign, and given that they trademarked MedicGrow it'd suggest they'd like to be around for a while. The fact that it's been 3 weeks since they took money and didn't even take the right amount or send an order confirmation suggests they have bigger issues than the profit/loss on a pair of boards.
