Maybe a dumb question, maybe not

why start in a small pot and transplant when you can just start your seeds in the final pot? Am I stupid for wondering this? It sounds like common sense to do that

It's done a lot of time to save on space and lighting. Hard to jam seedlings under a single light when there in big pots.

If you start off in a smaller pot, it allows your root mass to grow out and build a really strong root ball. Then as you transplant into larger pots, it will keep doing the same thing. When you start off with clone or seed directly into a giant pot, this causes the roots to grow directly out to the side of the pot and then go down to the bottom, thus leaving all the soil from the base of the plant outwards toward the pot edge to have very little roots.

Main point, this will negatively affect your ladies. It's better for them to gradually change pot sizes, you will notice a bushier growth for sure.

along with all of the above, I find it a lot easier to keep the moisture level properly in smaller pots.

You seem knowledgable on the subject...do you think it's okay to go from a clone in a rapid rooter thingie to 2 gallon pots? or do you think that's too quick of a change?

i agree with everyone, also, if they are started in big pots there is a greater chance of overwatering and drowning the roots of your young seedlings...
