Massachusetts Outdoor Grow 2019

Hi Everyone,

It feels like I just finished jarring up 2018's crop.... and it's hard to believe...but it's time to kick off the 2019 season. I've been reading this site for years. There's some great growers on here and tons of info. When I have a question I typically search it first on rollitup... and almost always find my answers. I've never really posted much (or at all) but I've always wanted to document one of my grows... so here goes ... hopefully along the way I can get some feedback from the community.

I GROW MY OWN ... I've been growing on and off for almost 20 yrs now. Along the way, I've learned a shitload, but also made every mistake possible. I started out growing indoors, but I've found I don't enjoy it anywhere near as much as growing under the sun. I like to grow huge plants, keep the best for myself, and give the rest away. I've never sold a gram and I never will. It's a hobby, and even though it's legal in MA now... I'll never set foot in a dispensary.

2019 ROSTER
... We're allowed 12 plants in MA per household... so you guessed it... I'm growing 12. I ordered my seeds from Seedsman this year, all feminized. I used Seedsman last year and overall I was happy with them. My favorite strain was Galaxy and that will the only returning strain this year. The rest of the strains I chose are supposedly early finishing (sept/oct) varieties, but I've never grown them before so only time will tell.
  • (3) Galaxy (Pyramid Seeds)
  • (3) LSD (Barney's Farm)
  • (1) Sweet Zkittlez (Royal Queen Seeds)
  • (2) Jack Herer (Seedsman freebie)
  • (3) Blue Funk (Expert Seeds)
I originally ordered 5 Blue Cheese seeds, but they sent 10 Blue Funk seeds instead.... I have a feeling they may have been out of the Cheese, and replaced it with twice as many Funk... but it's all good, I'm not a whiner... ill just roll with the Funk. I buried the seeds indoors on Sat 2/9, in an organic seedling mix, on a seedling heat map, and under a 4ft flourescent . As of today 7 of the 12 have popped... so far so good. (see photos)

2019 GROWING PLANS ... In the past I've grown plants everywhere ...in the ground, in raised beds, and last year in 25 gallon pots. Anybody that's grown in MA knows the weather is incredibly unpredictable. The last couple years have had great summers for veg.... but the sept/oct weather has been horrendous. We've had torrential rains, hurricanes, and 100+ humidity. Every year come sept/oct I'm a slave to the weather... rigging tents, humidifiers, fans, dragging plants into the garage, hydrogen peroxide, daconil, etc.... it sucks and I know there's no way to avoid it altogether... but this year I'm fighting back! The biggest change I'll be making this year is a greenhouse. I've ordered the 14.5' x 24' Gothic High Tunnel from tunnelvisionhoops (see attachment). It arrives in 2 weeks and in the meantime I'll be building the foundation, plumbing, wiring, drainage, etc for it. I think this will allow my plants to finish much better and hopefully help me maintain some of my sanity come September.

I'll be putting in 2'X2'X12" raised beds for each plant. The existing soil below the beds is already pretty good, but I'll still be amending that about 18" below the beds before filling them. I haven't figured out exactly what I'll use for soil yet, but I'm sure it will include some good compost, worm castings, and some kind of sand for better drainage. The highest point in the greenhouse is about 8.5' high, so I'm sure I'll need to top, trim, and shape the plants throughout veg to keep them all reigned in.

Well I guess that's it for now, but I'll try to keep this post updated as often as possible. Next time I'll post pictures of the outdoor location and progress on the greenhouse installation.

Also in mass and yes end of flower has been horrendous past few years. Looking forward to following along for the ride. How much did the green house run you? I've been thinking of doing same but contemplating building one but havent made up my mind yet. Good luck this year and I'll sub in for this one.

Also in the area. I've got a few seedlings (autoflowers; pandora) started in doors right now which I plan on having finishing outside if it warms up soon enough. Last summer was my first outdoor grow (only one plant that hermied and completely sucked) and the weather out here end of last summer was awful... Been trying to get ideas for how to contend with the weather come end of this summer; I'm thinking just get fast flowering genetics? Had a cheapo greenhouse last year but it would still get plenty humid in there despite not being rained on directly.

I'm also in the 508. I like to grow in dirt and have suffered the same end of season issues. I'll be following to see how the new greenhouse works out for you. I'm just not ready to pull the trigger yet but hopefully soon. All the best.

Hey guys,

Nice to see others from the 508, I knew there had to be others out there.

City, the 14.5 x 24 model base price was about 2400, and that includes everything to install, all the way down to the screws. I added a ventilation kit which was about another 350 and shipping to 508 was another 350 or so. It seems like a lot of dough, but I'm just tired of rigging greenhouses and covers come the fall. I originally was going to design and build something myself, but when I look into the cost including framing, poly, end walls, windows, doors, etc... i'm sure i wouldn't end up saving much money in the end.... and it would probably take me so much longer to build. I'm also into the fact that it's less permanent than if I framed it on site. I just built my house 4 yrs ago and we have no plans to move for at least 10-15 years... but you never know... what if my wife starts banging the mailman? ... I could prob get over thatt, but to know the mailman is now growing in my greenhouse, would just push me over the edge .... at least with this I could take it with me! haha

I also have an industrial size dehumidifier on wheels. It's used to dry out homes and basements that have water or flood damage. It can bring a house at 100% humidity down to 40% in a few hours. If we get real rainy, humid stretches in the fall I plan to run that in the greenhouse to keep the humidity consistent .

Good to see other Massholes in here, im on the coast near Boston. This is my 1st grow, I have 3 bagged seeds growing right now and I ordered 20 seeds from seedsman 2 weeks ago. This summer I want to try and grow a few outside on the back deck as well as have a grow going inside. I will def be following this thread.

that greenhouse way to small for 12 plants,i grew 12 in a 20-30ft with 14 ft ridge it was way to small packed an a mold magnet.cutting back to 6 this yr.once the roots hit the ground with good soil they explode.think about it your in raised bed with 8 ft ceiling out door!!

Thumper... I agree with you.. I'll never be able to fit all 12 plants in there. The beds will be 12" high, but will be recessed under a crushed stone foundation, so technically I'll be planting at grade. I'll also be using a horizontal screen at about 3 ft high to help spread them out the best I can.... but even with all the pruning and topping in the world, it would still be a giant mess in there with 12. I'll probably put in 8 beds and leave the other 4 in pots. The 4 orphans will either be used as spares or have to come outside when things get burly.

shit thumper... now you got me thinking this greenhouse is too small. I can bump it up to the 17x24 for about $300 more. I only really gain about 60 sq ft, but it's about 18" taller. I have the room for it, but not much bigger.

I also enjoy creating trees in ma. I have found that Barney's genetics are very suitable for our unpredictable climate.
Grew peyote critical and lsd last year and both fought mold very well.
Going with their shiksaberry and gorilla zkittlez this year. Both are supposed to be mold and pest resistant.
Good luck.

UPDATE: I haven't made a ton of progress outside, it's been all cold and snow for the last couple weeks. In the meantime I've upgraded to the 17'x24' greenhouse, adding a couple feet of width and almost a couple feet in height. Even with the extra space.... I've decided to reduce the plants in the greenhouse to my six best. Any others we keep will go in pots and move to another spot once they start to get too big. I imagine that even with only six I'll be working to keep them under control.

IMG_1999.JPG

Here's what the location looks like now,... frozen and sad. What I'll be doing is building a 20X28 raised bed "foundation" directly to the right of the existing vegetable garden beds and filling it level with crushed stone. The greenhouse will sit on top of that.... instead of directly on the grass there now. I will put the six raised beds in and fill with soil before filling around them with the stone. The lumber is already delivered, but I'm just waiting on the ground to thaw before I can put the foundation in. It shouldn't take long, I estimate a couple hours of light grading and installing the boards, then another couple hours to spread the stone....

IMG_1995.JPG IMG_1997.JPG IMG_1996.JPG

... and here are the ladies so far. Of the twelve beans planted on 2/9, only ten of them came to life. I lost a Blue Funk and Jack Herer. I may end up replacing the two I lost but for now I think I'm just going to roll with the ten. They were getting straight water up until saturday (2/23) when I gave them a tiny splash of Fox Farms Big Bloom organic with their water. That's pretty much all they'll get for the next few weeks except for a pinch of worm shit from the worm bins every now and then.

I'll be growing these with screens in the greenhouse, trying to spread them horizontally as much as I can until near the end of stretch. Keeping that in mind... I'll probably start topping some at about the 4th or 5th node. They're pretty much all on their 3rd node now so I'm guessing sometime late next week.

That's it for now... hopefully, weather permitting, by the next post I'll have much more progress outside.

Nice man we are in the same boat. My greenhouse wont get out till about mid june for the structure and will hold off on the plastic untill fall.

Screenshot_20190226-180128_Chrome.jpg Screenshot_20190226-180123_Chrome.jpg

The plants with burnt tips are actually 2 weeks older than the bigger plants didnt realize how bad my tap water ph was untill too late. I usually put out clones from buddys and figured they got transplant shock and he didnt have his light schedual dialed in for me. But now it clicked the whole time it was a ph shock that stunted them dureing my transplant had the same exact effects. Live and learn I guess.

781 checking in, planning for my first outdoor grow. Got a real sunny spot to handle a few plants . Can't afford outdoor grow structures so I'll be subject to the elements. Reading all above see a few that grew outside with what i see as varying results. Are there definite gotchas that I can try to avoid? Do I need to plant in pots? Almost afraid someone would walk off with a pot. Can I grow in just amended soil? Do I need to use some sort of fencing to deter wildlife? Cats, rabbits are the main visitors. Looking forward to working outside, don't want it to be a waste of time.

Thanks from the Bay State.

I use amended soil in the ground have never had any problems with anything munching on my plants besides catipillars in late august and Sept. Mid august I spray once a week with BT catipillar killer. Try to find a strains that will finish early or are mold resistant. Both is even better.

Remember to guard the girls from nosey neighbors, landscapers, etc. Don't want somebody coming by in the middle of night harvesting your plants for you. If you can't camouflage them, consider alarms and a trail cam.

This is gonna be awsome lol you don’t find that growing in ground causes more moisture problems in ma?
