Mainlining Question

I tried mainlining for the first time on my last grow. I followed the instructions I found online to get 8 colas but wound up with more. I think the problem is with not knowing what to do with the new growth after the initial pruning. Are you supposed to prune the "suckers" that grow on the branches after the initial mainline? Won't these make up part of the cola?
I've read instructions from numerous sites and they all stop saying what to do after the initial 8 sites are formed.
Anyone know of a better site for instructions or first hand advice? I've started a new mainline with a 100% sativa so I can limit the height. I've mainlined for 12 colas on this one but as it grows and all the suckers are forming at the nodes I cant help wonder if Im gonna have way more colas.
Can anyone help?

I just happened to be poking around and saw your post. You don’t back reference your online resources but I’ve been mainlining for a number of years using the “Nugbuckets“ step by step method. Over time I’ve made a couple subtle minor tweaks based on strain type but it’s definitely the way to get started mainlining. I‘m not sure how you mainlined to 12 colas as they should go from 8 to 16 typically not 12. Also note that mainlining sativa strains can be more challenging because the nodes tend to not grow symmetrically after the first couple of toppings. Here’s the link for the Nugbucket method… good luck and happy growing! :D

Thanks for the reply and link. I didnt reference any resources because I didnt bookmark any.
I read through the link you left and I understand the process all the way up to completing the number of desired colas. My question is then what?
As the new growth tips I've created for the number of colas grows out there will be new growth tips at each new node. Do I leave these growth tips or cut them off. I'm not very good at typing out my thoughts so I hope my question makes sense.

I mainline to 8 personally indoors, so I’d have 8 relatively symmetric individual trained branches… I then let them grow out to a height of 22”-24” above soil (I’m anticipating for stretch) before I flip to flower. I will also defoliate the bottom ~1/3 of each of the 8 branches within 7 days of flip and then reassess again at 21 days after flip for a follow up defoliation as needed. Then… just watch’m fill in!722D1A0F-A782-4C77-829B-F863CB044F9E.jpeg
Using the peony rings customized to sit 16” above the soil line is also recommended to keep those dank colas upright! Lol :D
