Looking around b4 buying PLEASE

Note: I prefer rye berries over popcorn (more easily uniformly hydrated, at least for me), but this is good general advice.

I have tried every kernel substrate you can imagine from bird seed to oats to brown rice to rye grass seed. Rye berries are in my opinion the best spawn material there is, if you know where to get it, it is cheap and it is usually clean. Popcorn will burst before it gets moist in the center, the kernels are too large and they don't do well as a substrate - BUT, as sprout says, it is easy to find and not very expensive.

huh???...you don't transfer the jars to bulk until they are colonized...I'd suggest about 3 months of reading until your eyes bleed at the shrooermy... http://www.shroomery.org/forums/index.php ...I read from June until Sept...all the while gathering up my bits and pieces ...mixed up 12 1/2 pint jars of BFR and noced 'em up after pasturization...at full colonization I realized ,unfortunatley, the jars had a shoulder so I went out got some hores-shit in the field nextdoor and went straight to bulk my first grow...if not for the months of reading I would have been scrambling for a solution to the shouldered jars...because I educated myself on as many aspects of the life cycle as I could before hand, the solution was already in my head...just how I got into the game...;))

Or, you could have simply cased them invitro and saved yourself all kinds of trouble.

no trouble at all...if you read properly I was prepared...so instead of a few grams dried...I took a full tray to 3 flushes...but I suppose when someone here has a different idea then you do it must be time to correct them...while you seem to know about growing shrooms...you also seem a tad " holier than tho"...a high horse just makes the fall hurt more...;)))

If I come off that way, and I must, as I doubt you would have said what you did otherwise, then I appologize to you AND the others reading here. I often talk over one's shoulder to others who may be reading and I hope you have read that over all I encourage growing mushrooms any way possible. By way of explaination though, I usually come here from an all political site and I suppose I come here a bit too combative.

Again, I will attempt to dial down any condescention I may be presenting, and thanks for pointing it out.

(with one caveat however, I will still campaign against PF tek)

Really? You think that I took sterilized jars. Un-inoculated. And then transferred them to bulk. And then inoculated them? Common. A little common sense buddy. Of course I inoculated the jars. Waited for them to fully colonize. And then transferred each jar to its own bulk tray. As soon as a jar is colonized. I take it. Smash it to bits. And then I transfer it to bulk. Then I wait for that to colonize and case. I should apologize. I made the mistake of assuming that you would understand where I am coming from. Apparently. You did not.
