I have a 400 watt hps bulb and i was wondering if it would be fine to use it in a normal socket like in a lamp or if i have to go all out and get a ballast for it. I'm trying to make this grow really inexpensive.

you need a ballast. then when you have the ballast you need to plug that into a surge protector then that into a wall socket.

never know, he might have street lights for regular lamps in his house.
