i have a 1000w bulb and ballast and was wondering if a lower wattage bulb would be fine hooked up to a 1000w ballast

No. Because of frequency. That can blow the bulb and/or fry the ballast or if lucky only blow a fuse in the ballast.
 
im in the same boat got a 1000w system tht i cant run cause its too hot. im down grading to a 600w specialy since summer time is here. i also dont have a cooltube which i cud run 1000w if i have tht i have 400+ cfm fan.
 
yeah my cool tube aint gunna do much for me cuz on either end the ducting makes a 90 degree turn immediately so it not rele doin much i just hope it all works for me

good luck to you.... you gettin an air coold reflector for the 600w?
