how far do i put 2-3 inch sprouts that have an inch (radius) of first leaf set from a 400w HPS light?

start at 24 inches, let them veg up to be 12-16'' away, what ever the back of your arm can handle...

if using an air cooled reflector or cool tube, you can keep it much closer.

About 18 inches is fine. You can go down to 12 inches if high temps aren't a problem.

my seedlings are usually about 24" away from my 1000w air-cooled.
