Lets talk about roots......

Sitting here talking about roots and a few really good questions came up so I figured I'd throw it out there for others to share their thoughts.

Transplanting before going into flower:
What is the best amount of time to let the plant adjust before sending it in ?
(we try and give them at least a week)

When the plant goes into flower and starts to stretch, do you think it slows down the stretch if the plant was recently re potted and the roots are stretching at the same time ?

The longer the better. Definetely atleast a week. Subcool just went over this in one of the last few weed nerds. That's on here and you tube.

i am curious about this also... i understand basic transplanting, i transplant often, but what happens before flower??? are we hurting ourselves allowing the roots to stretch, instead of bud growth??? brings up some good questions...

Personally, I try to not transplant after it starts flowering, just make sure its in a big enough pot first and hope for the best. Would love to know truth about roots/buds growing tho?!

Would you have anything to offer other then someone elses opinion ? You know some good old fashioned question and answer interaction ? How about your take on it ?

I put my well rooted clones in a 10 gallon tote 2 months before I flower

I transplanted 3 weeks into flower once on a 11 week strain, and That plant was a REALLY SMALL PRODUCER, compared to the other metheds i used. so I dont transplant in flower anymore, The plant needs a solid root mass before swicthing the lights over to 12/12.

in 3=4 weeks I can pull the whole rootmass out of the tub, on Chesse, Critical mass, ace of spades, . some strains take alittle longer

I've always gone the rout of changing up pots gradually after seeing a friend pot large from clone and the growth seemed almost non existent for what seemed like forever.

3 different pots before they hit their final flower pot..

I start in root riot cubes, then into a plastic beer cups with roots, then into three gallon pot. I just started with soil, you know that and I have been looking all this shit up so that I can veg longer and go into 7 gallon pot, some even 13 gallon pot. I want to veg longer, just like you are. I plan on vegging about 3 weeks after I'm into the 7 gallon pot, maybe 4. I figure you would like good info as opposed to my opinion. lol. I will still try to find that link anyway cuz it's good.

I guess if I was running more than my measly 600w light I would veg longer and what-not.. I veg for 4-5 weeks and may 4'x4' area is maximized by the time I'm into flowering. If I vegged longer I would just be over crowding my area and I think it would be detrimental to the grow, not maximizing shit..

I lst my plants and my shit is packed tight by week 4... My plants are plenty happy in a 3g pot. No need to re-pot them at all.

This one was only in 1/2 gallon, no shit lol...

We don't do tree's either. We lst and everything to keep them low giving us plenty of space for stretching in flower..
Like I said before, I saw a noticeable difference between putting a smaller plant in a larger pot vs transplanting as they root out smaller pots..

4 weeks average veg and 6 for others..
One batch of clones turned into two veg/flower cycles..

But the real question is will the plant rooting in a larger pot as it goes into flower slow down the stretch by splitting the plants natural energy ?

Good questions! I do believe that the plant directs more energy towards root growth when transplanted, which could very well inhibit other plant functions such a vertical growth (apical dominance) and bud formation .... so I bet transplanting inside a week of going in to flower would in fact slow down the stretch. Just a guess.

I'm not so sure this would be a good thing, though.

That's what I was thinking, and since the plant would be about done rooting by the time it adjusted to the flower cycle I can't see why it would hurt actual flowering/budding.. If anything the plant staying shorter would help due to the mass of the plant and needed nutes to sustain it. More would go to the flowering/buds then the stalks..

I guess it's all about timing. Transplant too late, and you steal potential bud formation energy and redirect it to root growth. Transplant too early and you end up with a lanky plant.

Just one more thing we can fuck with! :-)

i used to go from the cloner to 3 gal to 10 gal 2.5 wks before flower and it worked great but as of recently i have been putting clones strait from the cloner into 10 gallon pots and veg for 6-8 wks then into flower and this has been working a bit better "for me" for the way i train my plants... i top my plants and when they get root bound they start to grow "up" instead of "out" but with putting them strait into 10 gal pots they stay really short and bushy, also i do believe it will decrease the yield transplanting a wk or less before flower because the plant focuses on root growth and not bud sites.. with the way i do it now the plants are root bound when i put them into flower and they can uptake the more nutrients and in return grow BIGGER buds!! Just MY opinion
