LEDs, Peak, Dominant - What Wavelength?

Hey Folks,

I am trying to build my own LED light, and am a bit confused about peak / dominant and base wavelength. If I want a 660NM, should I try to find one that specifically is 660NM or one that is 640-660? Or 470 or 465-485? I am having trouble finding ones exactly at the required NM, usually ranges - is this normal?

If you're going with monochromatic diodes, I think if you name the specific wavelengths you want you should be golden. I've read from a few sources that monochromatic diodes emit light over a narrow range (i.e. they're not truly monochromatic, but close enough) depending on running temp and amperage.

Thank you for the reply. Would you suggest multi-coloured diodes? I see at times ones with a 700, 600 and 500 spectrum? Not really sure if those are also legit. I was planning 1 LED light for Veg and 1 for Bloom, so primarily Blues for Veg, and then a mix for Flower.

So when I specifically look for a 470NM and find the actual range is 460-465NM that is suitable? See the one I referenced. Because if it is OK to look for ranges too, it opens up my search options at mouser.com (limited # of specific bands, usually more ranges)

Are you looking to grow with this LED light? I was just wondering as those are very small LEDs and I typically don't see people using those...not saying they wouldn't work in a microgrow maybe...

Here are a couple of places that sell LEDs that are often purchased for top quality LED grow light building: ledgroupbuy.com and stevesleds.com Cree tends to make the best whites and Philips tends to make the best at the ends of the spectrum - deep red and royal blue...

Question:

When looking at commercial LED Lights, they use 470 NM. However the CREE ones on ledgroupbuy.com are 465-485NM http://www.ledgroupbuy.com/cree-xp-e-blue

Would this be suitable / OK? Or would a 475 be better than 465-485? See: http://www.ledgroupbuy.com/exotic-cool-blue-475nm/

Or should I specifically try and find 470NM? As I'm having trouble finding specifically 470NM, usually ranges?

don't think its that important, any of them nm will do good, don't think you will be able to tell a different, all will tricker photosynthesis, all is up there near the peak level, mix in some white LEDs to cover more of a full spectrum (I use 6500K ww in my fixture)

I costimized my fixture to replace my HPS, so its for flowering, I have 16x 6500K and 8x455 beside the red`s (8x620/16x630/32x640/32x660/8x700)
