Led vs HPS growing

How much is electricity worth in terms of raw harvest? If you would've have to pay twice of electricity at the gain of 50% more harvest - would that be considered a good investment or a luxury?
Good Morning!
Look forward to reading your post.
Scrolled to the bottom and saw the question above.

Would the additional harvest maintain the same quality? Many things done by commercial growers to increase the size of a harvest come at the expense of quality.

I think the answer will be different depending on a persons circumstance.
The owner of a 10,000 sq ft grow facility would say absolutely as long as quality doesn't drop far off from where it is.
A person growing for there own consumption is more likely to put quality at the forefront and not be willing to sacrifice if by increasing weight there was a drop in quality IMO. :peace:

as a PU MMJ grower i can legally grow 12 plants but I can't sell what I grow so quality and cost are what matter to me. seems a growing number of LED growers are supplementing with MH or T5s to add UVA for better taste and potency. as a T5 grower I am looking at LEDs to add deep red. i could do that with T5 plant bulbs but they need to be replaced every year. my 6500k loses 10% of their output at 20000hr. I can only afford cheap LEDs but these look interesting https://www.amazon.com/dp/B085VGZ4NL/?coliid=I2XHXNSVDSOOQB&colid=AW7UKM9ED6GM&psc=1&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it 45%efficiency at an affordable price

Im running RGB ontop & 5-6k on the sides of my baby veg. & they like it, i like the way they grow with burple & white. Veg & flower. 30-40% good burple/60-70% white did real nice in flower & the reverse does real nice in veg for me.
I loved my T-5's. Outstanding growth & health is easily obtained. But after seeing 100w replace 464w of t-5, i just couldn't do it anymore. In veg, the led strips (even in 58-6k) give me just as healthy & fast growing plants as the floros did. Non of the issues some have using cobs or high density leds in veg. Which i do not do unless highly dimmed & diffusued & supplemented.
Add a lil burple to that & its like MH growth with more root action.
I can only grow 12 too & try to make the best of it. Big plants are not exactly optimal use of the space when you have low ceilings Like me.
Those burple t-5 leds you'r looking at would be perfect to run one on each side of x2 boards (with spread diodes or a diffussion cover if densely laid diodes on the boards).
BTW, The $15-22 , cheep led T-5 or 8 replacements work nice on veg.
Sorta like this as to top & sides.
Led cut electrical use down so much & prices went up equally as much so electrical cost its almost even to when i started with HPS/MH & Floros some 7 or 8 yrs ago.
These are 7-10 days outta the cloner.20200821_125334.jpg20200821_125353.jpg20200821_125412.jpg

it seems for the time being hybrid lights may be the way to go. CMH or T5s are still the best way to get UV and LEDs may be the best way to get deep red and ir. I still believe plants need broad spectrum blue light to produce the best quality and a growing number are adding 10000k finisher bulbs along with UV bulbs to supplement their main grow light. what are those burple lights your running? Iwas thinking of running 2 of those fixtures as pontoons on a 4 bulb t5 with 1 FS PLUS UV bulb and 3 6500k. veg with T5 thrn add the LEDS for flowering, 112 watt radient power 320 watt input power. electricity only cost me$0.09/KWH so increasing system efficientcy to 35%will not change much but more deep red and UV should improve quality and yield. the aquarium crowd has been using hybrid lights for years with good results maybe I won;t need to replace deep red bulbs every year if these LEDS last a few years

Those burples are not anything id recommend.

Bugbee’s research says that LED “Blurples” are just fine. Zero difference for a given watt. Better to be efficient with your lights and energy usage.

Not for Nuthin but Bugbee is a few yrs behind a decent amount of us. His studies are great & i follow along but they are far from "Imperialistic" like i keep hearing some say. I giggle every time, its impossible for me not too.

Bruce Bugbee: he's not in the crop physiology business or the light meter business. He's in the empire business.

Just kiddin'. I'm guessing you meant to type empirical?

Actually, I believe he said that spectrum was less important, not irrelevant.
he did say they were studying UV and found benefit to it but he also claimed that even sprouts love direct sunlight. another study found that photoinhabition occurs at 1700umoles and is a PSII response. PSII stimulation requires violet light. I wonder if the lack of violet and UV in HPS or white LEDs would allow higher intensity without slowing growth https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Wah_Chow/publication/258215318_Mechanistic_differences_in_photoinhibition_of_sun_and_shade_plants/links/00b7d5338e1c4f17b5000000/Mechanistic-differences-in-photoinhibition-of-sun-and-shade-plants.pdf

Shitttt...still using my pro 9 plus 3 pro3s and 3 pro4s
Me too! With the ir ,470, 65k, 630/660, + the 35k cob or whatever you got i have both. Now its a 5k i hear. With plenty of red monos. We never needed upgrade for a nn. Or suplement. Reliable as they cone too. We got lucky! Some of the few that can be cutting edge 8 yrs later. Looking forward to the new Bar-8 's in 2 months. One with my spectrum too! Yippee!
The Pro-9 was a beast. Miss mine.

Some crazy led arrangement for early veg.
And introduciing the Fiet Special adjustable spectrum with Horticultural spec pontoons. Lol!Last of the clones getting kept for a while until the final cut. Gave the second string to outdoor friend.
