In what was a sold out and profitable venue this L.A. “Next Steps for Marijuana Reform” Conference March 19th Will host "participating" initiative efforts.

I have to say the idea of hosting a dialogue is the right thing to do but I question the for profit and the "participating" parts.

I guess one will have a chance to speak but to be wedged between what may well be two wrong choices I still see the chance to fail us in 2012.

On Saturday, March 19th, a conference is being held in Los Angeles to discuss where the cannabis law reform movement goes from here. Below is an excerpt from an email blast from our friends at OC NORML.
Saturday, March 19th at Ricardo Montalban Theatre in Hollywood
“Next Steps for Marijuana Reform in California,” a day-long gathering
of marijuana reform advocates, will take place March 19th at the Ricardo Montalban Theatre in Hollywood. In the wake of Proposition 19′s remarkably strong showing at the polls last year, this conference will address ongoing efforts to end failed marijuana
prohibition in California, steps to reform the state’s medical marijuana laws, and priorities for marijuana reform in the coming
years.
The conference is presented by California NORML, Drug Policy Alliance, Marijuana Policy Project, Americans for Safe Access, and
VibeNation MultiMedia. Confirmed participants include leaders of the Proposition 19 campaign and other ballot initiative proponents, Latino Voters League, California NAACP, United Food and Commercial Workers, Law Enforcement Against Prohibition, and California Church Impact as well as political consultants, attorneys, medical marijuana advocates, and public officials.
The event is open to the public, and the audience will have the
opportunity to comment and weigh in on competing proposals. A party and reception, featuring live music, other entertainment and
refreshments, will be held at the Montalban Theatre immediately
following the conference until 10 pm.
The conference follows up the sold out “Next Steps” conference in
Berkeley in January (http://www.canorml.org/nextsched.html).
What: “Next Steps for Marijuana Reform in California”
When: Saturday, March 19th, 9 am to 6 pm
Where: Ricardo Montalban Theatre, 1615 Vine St., Hollywood
Conference Schedule:
www.canorml.org/LAConfSched_Online.html
Tickets:
www.drugpolicy.org/nextsteps or http://bit.ly/enYQJX
Admission: $20 for the conference; $20 for the reception. A $30
discounted ticket for both events is available online in advance only.
We have to start planning now for 2012, especially in states like California. If you are in the area, a conference like this would be a great place to make contacts and get all the latest information about the movement in your state. California must lead the way in marijuana law reform, and the big test comes next year.

Public debate is good and I applaud the efforts.
However we need an internet presence as well.
Can we get these things on streaming video?
Interactive chat and live video is a way to include more.
If it is a question of profits then this is a false god for the legalization movement.
Oh by the way read the Five Things.http://california2012.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=202
We all have good ideas and mine is to keep it simple in 2012 and make it just for the people so that we can take a step that won’t fail.
Legalize for the people in 2012! Forget the all in one since the score for that game is two strikes for prop-19 and a home run for prop-215..
That is the big clue as to what will pass in 2012..Simple for the people and skip business and drug policy.
We are still a voter base of Pro and Anti cannabis people so give those that are for rights for people a chance to legalize for the people otherwise if there is just one aspect to the initiative that the voter who would vote yes for the people can point to and say I don’t like that then a yes vote becomes a no vote.
You see Prop-19 II didn’t compromise as well as it gave most people something to hate.
The answer isn’t to find a better compromise it is to simplify and legalize for the people first.
That is the way to change things..
People first Profits second.

I realized another thing about this profitable "Tour."
I happen to be a big fan of the movie "Paint your Wagon"

Oh and by the way this concept of public debate where the two sides are staged is called a Bull and Bear fight.
"The event is open to the public, and the audience will have the
opportunity to comment and weigh in on competing proposals."

California has a history of such entertainment.
The truth was it wasn't important that one or the other won it was important to collect the admission price ahead of time.

Perhaps Cannabis legalization in California is like "No Name City" in the film Paint Your Wagon..

The Moral of that story is after the Gold rush the people are what remains.
We can play the profit game but what we build in society lasts longer.
As Lee Marvin Sings in paint your wagon "Soon the Boozer's in Prison and the Criminal he isn't and only the Rascals got dough."
Maybe we all should watch that movie and substitute Cannabis for Gold and see what we get out of it.

They may be blocking freedom of speech there.

This is the third comment and so far only one is allowed.

That’s a horrible thing to say for someone that sacrificed so much for prohibition, Joe

It's a Bay Area Tit-for-Tat game.. A grudge match between Bay area egos at the expense of us all.

Just to offer a context to that post other than a Hate-Lee because prop. 19 was lacking.

Prop 19 was our Sonar. We have a ping image of the political landscape of where we were and that will not provide an accurate map of where we are now or which way to go but we have an idea of how deep the waters are around us.

I hope I can resolve this or we have people who are out to make money and are willing to shut us up again like the prop 19 people did on many sites..

I will keep up the effort.

One Click Censorship..

The Second and third post did not show up.. Feels like the Prop-19 mentality..

What the people have to say is just decoration.

We have got to get control of this or only those willing to sell out their neighbour for profit will rule the day.

<Bump> Any News?

I dislike that this pay for debate has picked the options for us ahead of time then tours for profit.
A Bear and Bull fight.

I am pointing out that these debates as to what our choices are for 2012 is a bull and bear show where admission seems to be the point since the choice for us are being presented are predetermined already.

Why is this a commercial enterprise? Why are we not reading about it for free and where are the blogs defining what the "Competing Concepts" are?

Are we being set up a year in advance?

Who is fighting for a simple and safe step of legalizing just for the private human citizen first then next election bring up the commercial interests.

Remember people there are Cannabis millionaires and there are Cannabis prisoners. To keep the price high Legalization for the people is the last thing Cannabis profiteers want so rise up against these private pay-for-debates!

I protest!
Who are these people to organize a for profit tour with pre-manufactured choices for us?
We disliked prop-19 II and I disliked the censorship of the prop prop-19 II people in the final days of prop 19 II.
It is true that Canna-Industry can waste another voting cycle since those who are making millions of dollars off cannabis every year don't go to jail but the average non-medical citizen does!
Are we going to be offered another "All-In-One" initiative that tries to get a sweetheart deal for industry by classifying a plant as a manufactured Goods?
That if it fails in 2012 it's 2 more years minimum of go to jail for the people and market control of sales for canna-industry?
What is needed is a Prop-215 style for the people only legalization this election cycle and get the canna-wealthy off the back of the canna-poor!
Seriously why do we the people have to use our 2012 chance to get the police and loss of property off our backs for growing this plant?
It's a plant that grows in the dirt. It is not a manufactured goods .. is not Wine!
Free the people first..
You would think the Prop-19 types would have figured out that by short-changing the people that it gives yes people a reason to vote no.
It is far wiser for industry to facilatate cannabis freedom for the common citizen and wait a while longer to expand their market than to try and gamble with our 2012 chance so that maybe a sweetheart business deal can be made..

It is not what Cannabis can do for you it is what you can do for cannabis.
Heirloom varieties, Seed savers and private horticultural collections were just three of the things Prop-19 II aimed at cheating the people out of..
I am wondering what crap we will read is our choices in 2012..
I don't know about you but I am already on the job exposing whatever slide of hand I see for legalizing in 2012..
So when do we get to see what these pay-for-debate people are presenting as our choices?
Is it anything more than a modern Bull and Bear fight where collecting admission is more important than who wins the fight?

OMG!

A Comedian is the spokesman for the people of California about their future cannabis freedoms? Can anyone verify what role this paid actor is playing?

Are these people serious?

A Bull and Bear fight? Where the goal is to collect admissions?
Prefabrication of our political choices for 2012?
The representative of the People of California is a Comedian?

We need a "for-the-people" only initiative for 2012 so we take a step no one can take away!
Business interests need to wait!
Cannabis people should be free to be Heirloom variety growers, Seed savers and private collectors of cannabis genetics that is not subject to a law that defines a simple plant as a manufactured goods.

Still not a peep.

I posted another comment of this site http://the420times.com/2011/03/l-a-...ence-march-19th/comment-page-1/#comment-29853

It is listed as awaiting moderation and the other two were rejected.

So here we go.. What we can or cannot say depends on profit margins I would believe.
Frack-That!

Legalize for only for the people as a safe and solid first step in 2012!
This For-Profit closed loop debate is a sham!

We don't need for profit tours we need community organization.

If we cannot legalize for the people in 2012 we cannot legalize!

Shame on these people making money purporting to be working on what we the people want.

Also Shame on those censoring what will get posted of not get posted.

I experienced the horror of our very own cannabis people shutting other cannabis people up by aggressive censorship in the run up to November 2010 elections.

So where are out community based groups? Where is those who can lead leading the people to Cannabis Horticulture freedom in 2012?

Are we now Canna-Rich against Canna-Poor?

Just remember.. We the people can boycott your dispensaries and that those boycotts can last a long time!

So where is the Freedom?

Legalize for the people in 2012..Skip Business and other special interests and free the people from Arrest and allow then as large a garden as they can manage in their communities.
Let them trade cannabis with others!

If we cannot do these things for the people then why in the hell should the people do even more for cannabis millionaires?
