Just Starting.... Seed Advice

Instead of ordering pricey seeds, I figured I would try to grow of some middie seeds I have for my first attempt. I have about 50 seeds I have collected. I was wondering if there was a way to tell the strain by the characteristics of the seed? Dumb Question?

I am also a newbie and wondered that when I first started out. So far, and I could be totally wrong, I have not found any information that says there is a way to tell.

This is my 2nd year growing outdoors. This is the first year I spent the money to buy top notch seeds. What a difference. I will never try to grow anymore without spending the dough on top notch seeds. Well worth the money and my time.

there is no way to tell ( unless u happen to have alot of experience with the strain) in that case u might be able to tell by color/looks/ect but most look to much alike to really tell ..... if i were you i'd put out some money on good genetic's .... good genetics are 50% + of what makes good weed ... if ur alittle short on cash go to seedboutique.com or whatever check out the nirvana seeds. 25$ for pretty much anything they have. so u spend 30$ and end up with weed thats 10x better a very easy decision :)

But if you are a first time grower , go ahead and grow those seeds and maintain a teachable posture. Those seeds will help to teach you so much about the growth and life cycle of the plants. So what I am saying is , at least you will get the experience.................

good luck~

Ordering seeds isn't so bad if you get a good source, bagseed is ok for learning but personally I think that in order to learn you have to feel like your going to get something out of it and the main goal at the end of your first grow is to gain some confidence and maybe get a little bud.

I think that growing bagseed can seriously dent your confidence particularly if you were to grow out 10 of your mixed seeds and get all males because there is no ratio to go by on bagseed because the seeds all came from different plants, ok you could be lucky and get a good grow out of some bagseed but if you don't and put 3 months of your life and work into it and don't get the results your looking for, you may just sell everything you bought to grow with and carry on buying bags.

i am still in the middle of my first grow of a plant i actually found in my backyard. and i have learned sooo much from it that i can't wait to do it again. maybe one day i will order seeds but as the previous poster being in the us it is scary to order seeds. i would say yes grow with your seeds if nothing else just to learn and next time you will have the knowledge. it would suck to spend $100+ on some white widow seeds and kill the girls. there are a few pics in my gallery it won't let me attach for they are too big. good luck to you.

learning from bag seeds can be a good idea provided you follow the advice given here - that is ....

1) Realize that you might not get any females or any smokable product
2) Use your first couple of grows as a learning experience and try not to get frustrated.
3) Use the experience you gain to get yourself set-up to do a bought-seed grow - meaning you'll already know what lights, nutes, ventilation do to/for plants so you'll be less likely to waste your bought seeds (and the money you spent on them).
4) your experience with bag seeds will carry over to the bought seeds - you'll be able to ask the "right" questions and you'll get the expert advice of others on the forum.

and since a lot depends on the strain - the plant from a bag seed should be just as good (if not better - depending on the grow conditions) as what you smoked! but (and this is a big but) if you have bag seeds, the weed obviously wasn't sinsemilla so you'll likely end up with hermaphrodites. But as long as you're doing this for experience (and maybe a toke or two) - you'll be fine with that, right?

as for ordering seeds, do it the "smart" way and you shouldn't have any issues. the "smart" way being - use cash and have them sent to a safe house (a house where nothing illegal is going on).

have patience, have fun and good luck!

The best thing you can do, is to get yourself some cheap seeds from a breeder and study hard before you start, ask loads of questions on the board. Run a journal as you go and find someone experienced who is willing to follow it and help you get to the end. There been loads of great first grows on here that have all got to the end and got some premium bud.

I just think bagseed can make you lose hope. Sure it could go well but with unknown seeds you can't expect anything. White widow doesn't have to cost 100 dollars you can pick it up for as little as 34 bucks posted to the states.
