Just set up shop and have some questions...

So today i just bought all the basic supplies: soil, a light, and a fan. I have it set up in my closet and just planted the germinated seeds, 1 or 2 in each small pot. My light is hanging about 2 feet above the pots. It is a 500w work light or whatever. Should I raise or lower the light? Will it work, bc it was the only light i could found that i thought could. How long should I leave the light on and off? When will i first see the plant start to grow? thanks and please feel free to leave any other tips...

You should have one seed to a pot, it saves a lot of heart ache down the road.

A 500 watt light? What kind of light?

first one per pot after they sprout transplant before the get root bound. id lower the light a couple inches above the plant after it sprouts. an leave your light on 24/0 till you want to flower switch to 12/12 hope this help u out good luck

Thats sound like a big hot holegen light. No good for growing at all. switch your lighting

You should be able to take it back, get some CFLs in the meantime. Also these guys have cheap grow lights

Yup 1 seed per pot make sure to germanate them before planting. that halogen work light is no good wrong type of light and will burn those plants and cause masive heat. www.marylandhyroponics.com has switchable digital ballasts cheap 400 watt setups $99 and 600 watt setups are only $119.

Sorry Fletch I keep forgetting about them, I ordered from them a couple of weeks ago thanks for the heads up....

CFLs are those spiral light bulbs.They arent so good but can be used if that your last choice.If you get those dont get anything smaller then an actual 65 watt bulb they cost about $15 each and you should get like 4 of them.They say they equal 300 regualr watt bulbs but that high so 4 would get you coverage for about 6 plants.and cost about $60 plus reflectors and cords

He said the light was 500 watts.....A COUPLE INCHES AWAY FROM A SEEDLING!?!?!? Dude if your not gonna give good advice dont give any at all.

You don't need CFLs for the whole grow I was just saying to get some until you get a grow light, you need something to keep the seedlings going, right?

Compact Flourescent Lights. They're the spiral shaped lights. You'll find them about anywhere, no worries. They use less wattage than incadescent lights, so go for the highest wattage you can find (40w is good per light, unless your lamps can support something higher). Generally, the more lumens (amount of visible light) per CFL, the better. Depending on the brands you find, you might see the lumen listing on the package. Forty watts is ~ 2600 lumens, usually.

And keep those lights close to the plants. 2-4 inches if the CFLs are cool. They generally don't penetrate well past six inches.

Oh, and as for the setup, you can use regular lamps; I've found that floor lamps seem to work the best when you unscrew them and hang the shade/reflector. However, using a bathroom light fixture or something is ideal (though a tiny bit more work)- there are plenty of guides on this site for adapting one to a wall plug. If you can, at the very least, see if you can find a "y socket splitter". They look like a "Y", with two light sockets coming off of an end that you screw into the one lamp socket. I'm sure you know what I mean.
