just ordered a mushroom grow kit.

So I bought a mushroom grow kit from http://www.magicmushroomkit.ca/Mega-You-Grow-Magic-Mushroom-Spawn-Kit-p23.html

Does anyone have any experience with this or any other type of grow kit? After a little research it appears the most crucial part is sterilizing the substrate. I have never grown mushrooms before, but I am pretty good at growing marijuana and vegetables. I know they are totally different, but I'm hoping it all comes down to following direction and patience.

Hmmmm this is interesting I'm trying to just order some spores, figured that they'd be much smoother through customs than an entire grow kit, I thought I'd just grab a mushroom grower from bunnings =) this is the only one they have though, will this grow magic? Pretty sure I'm ordering a golden cap variant

You should've come on here before you bought the kit cuz everyone would've told you not to waste your money, you just paid hundreds of dollars for materials you could've bought for about $50.

You are probably right. I should have done some more research before the purchase instead of after. Just like when I started growing weed, I'm probably going to make some mistakes. I'll own up to an expensive impulse buy. If it does not work out, I'm going to try again, but with my own set up. The kit that I ordered comes with cubensis spawn instead of spores. All I will have to do is sterilize the substrate and create a sterilized fruiting chamber. Then I will have to maintain the temperature, humidity and light requirements. If the kit looks really cheap and shitty, Ill keep the substrate and spawn and create my own fruiting chamber out of vermiculite and a fish tank. Either way, I am fine with being a guinea pig with this "mushroom grow kit".

Perhaps you could suggest some items for 50$ or under that would make a good home mushroom kit? (excluding spores or spawn)

I've also heard bad things about the spawn bags that come with these kits. Have you ever heard of monotubs? You could buy a clear plastic tote and fill the bottom with spawn. Check out this thread, https://www.rollitup.org/t/how-to-grow-mushrooms-the-easier-cheaper-way.979307/

Thank you for that link. In my case with the over priced kit, I will use this method. Ill use the substrate materials provided and sterilize them with the boiling water in one of my old gumby hash buckets (Ill clean and sterilize the bucket too) and mix the substrate with the provided spawn in a sterilized plastic tote I have and go from there (unless it's clear with the kit that i have to prepare the provided spawn differently).
I'm learning quite a lot about mushroom growing in the past couple days and the more I learn the more I realize I should have purchased spore syringes and made my own substrate. Despite my error, I'm going to learn as much as I can and give the materials in the kit the best shot I can. If it fails, anyone reading this in the future will certainly know to stay away from kits, and Ill go about it another way, but much the wiser.

Only the top of the tote has to be clear and you should do a little research on isolating it's really simple it's like cloning and is supposed to greatly increase yield.

It's not even worth growing these fucking things. You need a hepa filter that pushes filtered air over your workstation, a sterile ROOM - not just area, and extreme hygienic practices overall. The spores are delicate little pussies, you'd expect little tanks since they grow on shit. Easier and better to grow grass and trade for the caps.

I see your thread talking about your dream of growing them, but you never posted any proof you were successful. That was like, over a year ago and you never mentioned it since. I'm thinking you're talking out of your ass.

No I've never grown them myself I decided to focus on grass for the time being, but everyone who's actually grown them will tell you it's easier than growing weed and growing weed is pretty damn easy.

I hear you. I expect a challenge. I have been reading articles online about growing mushrooms pretty much non-stop. I don't know anyone who I can buy psilocybin mushrooms from, (just like I didnt know where to marijuana from many years ago) so if I want them, I need to roll up my sleeves and get to work. I realize that sounds silly, since I bought a shortcut way to grow them in a kit. But a man's gotta start someplace.
I think you are right, a sterile environment seems to be paramount to prevent cross contamination. So I know that is going to be the real challenge. If this kit business turns out to provide me with common mushrooms without psilocybin, I'm going to use the pressure cooker and jar methods with homemade substrate and spore syringes.

Either way, I don't mind hearing criticism from a young Kurt Russel with a stack of bills in his mitt. What happened to when men were men huh?

So ignore the people saying kits suck. The first mushrooms I grew were from the kit they advertise in High TImes. It wasn't the cheapest option, but I didn't need a pressure cooker, or to sterilize anything. I ordered the kit, and followed the instructions, and in my case because of some bad temps, a couple of months later I had mushrooms. It was great. It taught me a lot and encouraged further research. When I did decide to grow again, I set up a bulk tub system myself. It was cheaper, but waaaay more involved, and buying a pressure cooker was still costly. In the first 15-20 pages of my grow journal I showed all the processes I went through to grow my bulk batchs.

I tried both, and mushrooms indoors is everything I mentioned above. Unless you dumped spores on cow shit and somehow had success, it's not easy - it's just less time consuming since you don't need to

Mushroomman666 or something like that is a great supplier for spores of all kinds. Good deals.

Make sure you have bleach on hand. Buy an alcohol burner. I had one made custom by a glass blower.

You can absolutely buy pre-sterilized substrate but you still need clean work area and equipment and you should still filter your air.

This design looks like what I have seen several people using on this forum and some others. But the main thing I notice, is that this tote fruiting chamber has WAY more holes for airflow than what I have seen people using in their home grows. In fact most of the grow journals I have read, don't emphasis air flow like they do in this article. Is it perhaps that edible mushrooms like the ones mentioned in the link, require more oxygen transfer than psilocybin mushrooms?

They are probably just better at living. Shrooms are notoriously weak and get conquered easily by a ton of competition.

I used to just make a few 1" holes and plug them with aquarium filter floss for dustfree gas exchange.

Heating the end will help penetrate holes.
