At the risk of pissing off Saudi trolls, this should be known. it looks like Kushner's buddy the crown prince of Saudi Arabia is going to skate on any responsibility.

Nothing suspicious about Trumps' meeting with them and the Russians (Seriously every American should read the Mueller report if politics has entered their lives at all, learn how to spot the B.S. propaganda regardless of what 'side' of an issue you think you are on.) in Trump tower.

"Nader’s testimony to the grand jury came after he attended a December 2016 meeting at New York’s Trump Tower with presidential son-in-law Jared Kushner, former chief strategist Steve Bannon and Mohammed bin Zayed, crown prince of Abu Dhabi."

not sure which topic you want this thread to start off on.

So, I'll just jump to my bias which is to not talk about which chemicals were used and how Kashoggi's body was disposed of. I'm curious why you think the meeting with Russia is not significant.

What is Kushner's role in the White House and why was HE the one meeting with Kislyak during the transition from Obama's to Trump's administration? Why weren't those meetings reported to officials in the Obama WH? Also, so what if Mueller didn't uncover a smoking gun? Trump, Inc, has huge ties to dirty money and oligarchs in Russia who would be better described as crime bosses. How many other unreported meetings were there? I'm just a shmoe but this shmoe is suspicious when people close to the most corrupt president in history have private meetings with crime bosses on the eve of that most corrupt president's taking control of the office.

There is an old saying that Trump's family ignores: If you want to avoid suspicion, don't stop and tie your shoes in a watermelon patch.

No worries, those are good points. And I am sorry I did kind of made it look like a post that would have been cut/paste from one that deserved to be cut apart.

What I am worried about is what Snowden gave them in 2013 that they made such a big operation in 2014 to today. If he gave them a way to collect every scrap of data, and they combine it with the ability to tease out where every voting american (or any other democratic country) particular quirks its done, they have it forever, everything we post. So they can weaponize a lot of conversations using any and every website. Down to the district your in, which affects judges among everything else.... And not even just Russia at this point I am actually starting to think about those old Saudi nailing us on 9/11 threads. But I can't say 9/11 without worrying I'm a year or two from wearing a tin foil hat.

We'll see.

Personally, I think the effect Russian (or Saudi) propaganda has on elections is a nudge rather than a push. The election was close enough so that a nudge gave Trump the win. We have about 10 years to go before an upcoming generational shift takes hold. During that time the fading silent generation and the conservative half of the boomers will contend with a tenuous but steadily growing socially left coalition of millennial and various other groups. The '20's will be dynamic politically with shifts that are susceptible to outside nudges. If we can keep the right wing fascists from shutting out majority rule, I'm optimistic about the long term.

Short term, agree that outside influence plays a role in policy, maybe down to the debate in my county of funding the renovation of our aging courthouse vs building anew.

Yeah the propaganda being spewed out is on the edges I think too, its the combination of suppression of opposition, firing up the people who will vote their way with the drowning out of the middle's ability to have a conversation with each other that is so worrying to me. The ability to sort through massive data and analyze it allows bad actors to pinpoint us with bullshit we are predisposed to fall into the trap of based on everything we have ever said/done online. Now with Conman in chief having the ability to weaponize anything by making it a 'news' story anytime he wants to change the subject and we are outgunned at the moment by a lot.

I am with you though, this too shall pass and we will be better off it, but in the meantime we are open to having the worst candidates pushed on us because we are so used to being able to not really need to worry about who we vote in.

And, as usual, a good number of people who should be like minded are not. Instead of finding common cause with those who oppose facsism, they are concerned only with their own viewpoints threatening to defect if all their desires are not met.

It really is similar to the Weimar Republic.

Remember the Bezo's hack and how it was linked to the National Enquirer (Trump's propaganda buddies in print) leaking his affair that ended up with him getting a divorce. Turns out he got a file sent to him by the other Trump propaganda buddy MBS 5 months before Kashoggi got massacred.

I really want to know if Kashoggi had information about a Trump/Saudi plot. Guess we will have to wait for a new President to find out.

@Fogdog you are spot on about the 'nudge':

MBS is now getting the green light from Trump to torture American citizens. We need to come together as a country and not let the trolls pretending to be for this guy or that one divide us up and make each other so angry we forget what is at stake if Trump and the Republicans are not voted out in November.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — The family of slain Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi announced Friday they have forgiven his Saudi killers, giving legal reprieve to the five government agents who’d been sentenced to death for an operation that cast a cloud of suspicion over the kingdom’s crown prince.

“We, the sons of the martyr Jamal Khashoggi, announce that we forgive those who killed our father as we seek reward from God Almighty,” wrote one of his sons, Salah Khashoggi, on Twitter.

Salah Khashoggi, who lives in Saudi Arabia and has received financial compensation from the royal court for his father’s killing, explained that forgiveness was extended to the killers during the last nights of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan in line with Islamic tradition to offer pardons in cases allowed by Islamic law.

The announcement was largely expected because the trial in Saudi Arabia left the door open for reprieve by ruling in December that the killing was not premeditated. That finding was in line with the government’s official explanation of Khashoggi’s slaying that he was killed accidentally in a brawl by agents trying to forcibly return him to Saudi Arabia.

Prior to his killing, Khashoggi had written critically of Saudi Arabia’s crown prince in columns for the Washington Post. He’d been living in exile in the United States for about a year as Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman oversaw a crackdown in Saudi Arabia on human rights activists, writers and critics of his devastating war in Yemen.

In October 2017, a team of 15 Saudi agents was dispatched to Turkey to meet Khashoggi in the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul for what he thought was an appointment to pick up documents needed to wed his Turkish fiance. The group included a forensic doctor, intelligence and security officers and individuals who worked for the crown prince’s office.

Turkish officials allege Khashoggi was killed and then dismembered with a bone saw. The body has not been found. Turkey, a rival of Saudi Arabia, apparently had the Saudi Consulate bugged and has shared audio of the killing with the CIA, among others.

The grisly killing, which took place as his Turkish fiance waited for him outside the building, drew international condemnation of Prince Mohammed.

The 34-year-old prince, who has the support of his father King Salman, denies any involvement. U.S. intelligence agencies, however, say an operation like this could not have happened without his knowledge and the Senate has blamed the crown prince for the murder.

After initially offering shifting accounts of what transpired, and under intense international and Turkish pressure, Saudi prosecutors eventually settled on the explanation that Khashoggi had been killed by Saudi agents in an operation masterminded by two of the crown prince’s top aides at the time. Neither was found guilty in trial, however.

In addition to the five who had been sentenced to execution, the Saudi trial concluded last year that three other people were found guilty of covering up the crime and were sentenced to a combined 24 years in prison. In all, 11 people were put on trial in Saudi Arabia for the killing.

Saudi media outlet Arab News sought to clarify Friday that the announcement made by Khashoggi’s sons may spare the convicted killers from execution, but does not mean they will go unpunished.

In an interview in September with CBS’ “60 Minutes,” Prince Mohammed said he takes “full responsibility as a leader in Saudi Arabia.” But he insisted that he had no knowledge of the operation, saying he cannot keep close track of the country’s millions of employees.

SAUDI ARABIA’S assassination of journalist Jamal Khashoggi took place Oct. 2, 2018. Khashoggi, a Post contributing columnist then living in exile, went to the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul for paperwork so he could remarry. As has been documented by United Nations envoy Agnes Callamard, a Saudi hit squad arrived with forensic tools, including a bone saw. The Khashoggi killing came after previous attempts by the crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, to lure the journalist back to the kingdom and silence him.

The Khashoggi case is one of deception and murder with impunity. Khashoggi’s body has never been found. Now comes a chilling new chapter of alleged Saudi perfidy that should once again remind all that the kingdom is led by a ruthless despot.

When Khashoggi disappeared, the kingdom said he had requested the paperwork at the consulate and “exited shortly thereafter.” On Oct. 7, a Saudi official, responding to reports that Khashoggi was killed in the consulate, “strongly denounced these baseless allegations.” On Oct. 8, the Saudi ambassador to the United States said reports Khashoggi was detained or killed “are absolutely false, and baseless.” On Oct. 15, President Trump said he talked to the crown prince and “his was a flat denial.”

However, a lawsuit filed Thursday alleges that about the same day the crown prince made the “flat denial,” a second Saudi hit squad traveled to Canada. This time, the target was Saad Aljabri, a former top Saudi intelligence official who had worked closely with U.S. officials on counterterrorism in the past. The crown prince apparently wanted to silence him, too. The lawsuit, brought by Mr. Aljabri, contains unproven allegations, but they have eerie parallels to Khashoggi’s assassination. According to the complaint, the Saudi killers who flew to Toronto belonged to the “Tiger Squad,” the crown prince’s “personal mercenary group”; they carried two bags of forensic tools; and the squad included an instructor in the same criminal evidence department as the executioner who dismembered Khashoggi. The squad members, traveling on tourist visas, were asked by Canadian officers at border control if they knew each other. They lied, saying they did not. On secondary screening, a photograph was discovered of them together and their plot was thwarted, the lawsuit says.

In his final minutes of life, Khashoggi was told by his killers, “There is an order from Interpol. Interpol requested you to be sent back.” Mr. Aljabri alleges in his complaint that the crown prince threatened him on WhatsApp on Sept. 10, 2017, that if he did not return to the kingdom on his own, a worldwide manhunt would be initiated based on bogus corruption charges diffused by Interpol, the international police organization. The crown prince tried to make good on the threat, but fortunately Interpol rejected the material in 2018 as “politically motivated.”

The new allegations, if proved, reinforce the conclusion that the kingdom is led by a crown prince who commands death squads and continues to evade accountability for murder.

Weregild is a norse word, it means Blood Money, this is a traditional way of settling accounts in the Arab world too, between clans or tribes. In this case it was a silver or lead proposition, MBS has too much bad PR for comfort. Those who followed "orders" are forgiven, with compensation to the victims family, this also has legal implications and makes pardons or commutations easier. If not this, MBS would get it from both sides, Khashoggi's and the clan of the people who died carrying out the orders for his murder.
