Is your digital HID ballast quiet?

I have a 400w digital ballast from ipowergrowlight and its cooling fan is pretty damn loud... is it true that lumatek ballasts are silent? My growcab is is my closet and i can hear the fan in my bedroom with the door closed =/.... i cant even hear my 480 cfm fan(running at 40% speed or so)

I just went from digital to mechanical.... what a difference. The mechanical ballast was surprisingly quiet (silent) and cool. I'm very happy with the switch. My fan actually went out on my ballast and overheated the thing. It always had a whine to it.

I am pretty sure the lumatek are fanless, right?

If there's a pc fan in your ballast then that's the cause of most the noise. I have my ballast outside the closet hanging on my wall. I personally like the sound lol I think its relaxing since I don't sleep in the room I grow in but I love to read in there.. I got a couch set up in there its like a man cave for growin pot.

anyone else? i realize its the fan lol but its LOUD AS HELL, way louder than any pc fan ive ever encountered. Anyone have a lumatek? Im not quite prepared to go drop $140 on a ballast unless i know for sure thats its actually quiet

I upgraded from a 150W Magnetic core ballast to a 400W Digital Greenhouse ballast and its about 2-3x as loud overall.

The MH bulb and ballast both 'wine' and the fan for the ballast is always on when the unit powers up. Added to my circulation fan and exhaust fan.

Although my set up is much noisier, it isn't a deal breaker. Mind you I live in an apartment.

I have a Galaxy 1000W dimmable that I've been using for a couple of years, it's very quiet and runs very cool as well.

I'm looking to make the switch from CFLs to HPS/MH soon, I have already tried anot iPower 400w with digital ballast. It was too hot and too loud. Would a 250w mechanical ballast or fanless lumatech be quieter and emit less heat? My grow area is 5'x2' thanks

I have an ipower 600w.

The fan is incredibly loud. I switched mine out for a store bought pc fan.

It make a really annoying noise.

My other 600w ipower I just took that loud ass fan out and didn't put another in.

That's the no fan ballast. It is out hanging on the wall. Stays cool.

My other ballast is in a confined area and needed a fan to stay cool.

To remove the fan:

Remove 4 screws from end plates.

Slide top cover off

Remove screws from fan.

Install new fan

Slide top plate back on

Put end plates back on.

Hey, I've got an ipower and just removed the fan. Did you ever end up having any issues without the fan?
thanks

I just tried out my new Digital 600w for the first time - and with the fan noise its far louder than my old 400w mechanical. Kinda bummed, one of the advertised points of the digital was being quieter.
