Is topping more effective than fim?

I've fimmed before and I'm not sure how much of it was fim or whether it was mostly good lst . But I'm wondering wether a proper topping would be more effective or not at the early stage of veg and get maximum exposure

if you do it right, topping once will give you two colas, fimming will give you 4...if it works right...
topping twice will give you 4 colas, but its more stressful on the plant and takes longer to recover from than fimming,
so it just depends, topping has always been more reliable to me, i know what its going to do, fimming is great if it works right, but there have been times i've only gotten two or three colas and not 4
