Is it worth it to buy 150 watt HPS light???

I am using CFL for vegging but I have my doubts about CFL when it comes time to flower. I only have a single plant so I know I don't need a big HPS light. What would you suggest? I have been looking at a cheap ($70) 150 watt HPS light on eBay. Is that sufficient to bloom the hell out of a single plant? Or do I need a 250 or even 400? Also safety is key....and I don't want to burn my crib down. Should I spend the bucks and get a digital dimmable HPS? Are they more safe like I've heard?

man if you can wait till the mid of next week i'll be glad to let you know. That's when I'll be gettin my 150w hps, im currently using cfl's to and have my doubts im lookin for more dense buds not the fluffy airy looking buds, but when I get it i'll put some pic's up sorry I couldn't really help im in the same boat haha

400 watts will grow more, no doubt. What you have to consider is not what it can yield but what you are growing and in how much space. If all you grow or need is 1 or 2 small plants at a time then the 150 is great. 400 watts requires more space, more cooling and costs more than twice as much to run. If you can get the ballast outside of your grow box or space a 150w bulb will produce no more heat than a few cfl bulbs. But then if you want to grow a tree you need 400w or more.

What if you were to be doing 12-12 from seed, would a 150w hps be good for say 4 plants?

150w work pretty good i have one in my veg room tell i get a mh and when i used it to flower my banana og it yeilded 2 oz but it wasnt very big and a squirell got the best of it while it was in veg lol i work reconmend starting out with one and start upgrading

any HID light is going to work just fine if you use it on what it was intended for, a 150w light will work great on say 2 small LST plants or a small scrog but it wont work verry well on 2, 5-6 ft plants. if you want to go with a 150watter build a little ScROG screen and do some research on training tecniques for ScROG get 2 plants under your screen and fill it up, a 2x4 ft screen would probabally work great thats 2 sq ft per plant and the 150w HPS should get good coverage.

my 2¢

So it sounds like you are saying 150 watt HID is sufficient for my one plant grow? I am vegging from seed 30 days and then flowering. I am looking for higher yield than flowering with CFL. My space is about the size of a small bathroom. I don't want heat issues.

150w hps will do what you want it to. Id say go for it! I have a buddy that grows with one and it puts off almost no heat, he has no real ventalation lol. His yields suck ( like a oz a run out of 2 plants each time) but hes a shitty grower to say the least. has no knowledge on growing.

Lol what kind of yield would I get out of a single plant under a 150 watt hps? It would be better than under CFL's right? What about if I did the same single plant under a 250 Watt or even a 400 watt hps, would the yields be that much better for a single plant with the additional wattage?

More light = more bud. Always good to have more light, worst comes to worst and you decide you need even more light you could always use the 150 as a supplemental to something bigger. You could even grow with a dual spectrum in that case.

i try to give each plant at least 50 watts of light so i would use a 200 watt at least. but the 400 is way better IMO and if nothing else you'll yield more.

Looks like I can't lose with the 150. As far as economy $70 shipped is cheaper or as cheap...as I would invest on big high wattage cfls for flowering. If I have the extra $ a 400 watt dimmable to 250 looks good and would save me upgrading later for maybe $50 additional cost.
