Is it a good idea to trimm roots periodically?

im using a hydro/DNW sys and was wondering if its a good thing to trimm the roots from time to time?

From what I read in Marijuana Horticulture: The Indoor/Outdoor Medical Grower's Bible By Jorge Cervantes, the roots should not be trimmed. This stunts the plants development. If your roots get big enough to trim, it's time to repot.
