Is Death An Absolute Certainty Or Not ?

Can we be absolutely certain of anything in life. While on another thread that started about evolution I was drawn into thinking about if anything is an absolute certainty.

My conclusion was the only thing you can be certain of is that in the end we will all die. I meant this in the physical term, not spiritually.

What are others views on this and does anyone else have any ideas as to what they can say is an absolute certainty ?

In the most egotistical sense I am the only important being, just because I cannot be sure than anyone else actually is not a character in my story.

But I don't have any special powers that I have not seen others possess. So therefore I come to the conclusion that I am the same as everyone else. And if other people can die, that must mean that I can die. So really if I follow that though, I must not be special at all. Which means that I am just as special as everyone else, and can now put them above me, since I can then enjoy how I make others feel.

And once I figure that out, I can be at peace that when I die, the world will still be fine, and I can do my part by becoming part of the food chain, and life still goes on.

Sound similar to the lion king's "The circle of life".
I do believe we will live on in others, through passing on our genes to our children and our bodies will be re-consumed by the earth or animals, our mineral essence being reused time and time again giving sustenance to plant and animals alike, the only immortality we can hope for. But even then can this all come to an end as an absolute certainty ?

"What if.... What if we only die because we merely accept it as an inevitability?"- stewie griffin.

May you stay forever young.

I thinks its all mentality. I am haggard old and can barely move some days... However if I wake up feeling mentally prepared I feel younger than I ever have. GUARENTEE I could run circles around a very good majority of the people here... But like I said I have what I call "old man" days where I hate u all more than myself and my body doesn't care to function beyond reaching for the medicine. So in not so short. Life is what YOU make it if its not how can u say u have any control over any aspect in it? Run ur life and own ur possessions never get it twisted and u have the recipe to youth.

Well, On the other thread I believe you said Death is certain to all, and U didn't mean spiritually, Well I do Mean Physically/ Literally....

But first, I raise the ? When do we stop being Human... What part of I, You, We, have that makes Us Human... Is it my Broken Hip, Knee replacement, Hearing Aide, Pacemaker, Contact lens, Breast Implants, etc.. etc... Or, Something More.... But if All the things that make us Human are slowly being replaced by Artificial parts, devices, synthetic enhancers (pill form as well).. All to extend/prolong life... If we come right down to it, people are lLiving now, who would be no longer here if not for being placed on a Machine...When Do we stop being Human.. If we completely begin to extend life and prolong life, When do we lose sight of the Human existence..

And I'm not saying we do or Talking on Some Terminator, Matrix, I Robot shit, Although we generally project what our minds can Phantom, it may not Always translate into our Physical Reality that Way, But saying Only if we still call ouselves Human, Then guess What?

we Are Alive

The big bang baby!

After this planet is dead and our solar system is swallowed by larger ones, and those end up being sucked into larger dead stars (black holes) and the massive gravitational forces pull all matter back into one huge massive cluster of everything that made up the universe, and its gravity pulls everything inside of itself making it more and more dense (and there would be a tinniest bit that was once my matter) and eventually it gets to the point that it has too much pressure and blows up again sending my matter out again into space.

Where it becomes part of another solar system, and gets picked up by the planets, then maybe it is a lifeformed planet, if not maybe I need to wait until the next time around.

Who knows, but it still all fits, and science has some comfort in it. Religion can take the science out of god, but science cannot take god out of religion. Maybe we are gods pool table.

And yes very circle of life.

Glad you came in on this discussion Bazko as it was you that made me question my own thoughts as to if death is a certainty.

Being human doesn't come into the equation for me for if you even become something else, you may no longer technicaly be human, you can still be alive. As with the idea of evolution if we evolve into something else it doesn't mean we are dead.

I know I blabbed on about 'Circle of life' stuff but to me thats not rearly me living on in the physical term but me contributing to other life continuing, wether I want to or not.

I suppose there is always an argument and counter argument to say how we can go on and on or not, as any absolute certainty can change with time an circumstance. I think its time for me to stop thinking too deeply about it and light up a fat on a pass it around.:bigjoint:

Absolutely beautiful post, exactly the way I think.

I'm 31 and often wonder where science and medicine will be in like 70 years, compared to where it was 70 years ago? My great grand mother made it to 104. Where could we end up?

Could..why not? I was just looking at average life expectancies a bit. Right now it's at 80 here in Canadan In the U.S or N America 70 years ago it was at about 60 or just under, 70 years before that in the 1860's the longest being around 40 but alot of cities in the 20's! These are expectancies at time of birth.

Yes where will Science/medicine Lead us.. Right now it stands stagnate b/c Morality comes into play.. Morality in the sense of being, who should be the Giver and Taker of life. Should man decide one's fate or, should the Deity God be the only 1 who know's our Fate (will the REal G.O.D. pls stand UP). Right now, we fail to move forward in fear because some simply feel we shouldn't play God, but how can we play God when we have never been separate from God., To further explain every cell is independent in its function, and it's function is for the benefit of the Whole body.. Now we can go micro to Macro to further see this process, but let's just assume we get the idea , So with that in Mind I don't see our actions as against God's Will, although some actions must be corrected b/c they are against God's Will, just like some Cells are not beneficial to the Whole of the Body (cancerous), Get it, Moving On......

Back on topic, once we begin to move pass the morality of who is Playing God, I assume that life will extend w/o limitations. We already have the tools and technology to do so Now, and play significant roles today on where life is to begin and end. Not just from the view point of the Morality of Abortion, which a lot of religious people have problems with, yet they embrace birth control for Susie to inhibit Life :-|, but that is Morally Ok b/c that falls outside of the Law defined Meaning of when life is said to begin :-|, also our use of the Death Penalty, we already decide who & what is to live or Die within the Law that is :-|, Anyway, we have the knowledge of stem cell technology, cloning technology, and other advanced procedures that will further extend/prolong life, we are doing it Now anyway with all the different appartuses that we use Today.. So it simply comes down to us evolving pass such Morality issues that will determine how soon or if not ever, we continue the life progression as we know it.. These are touchy issues and ones we care not to discuss because it doesn't seem to directly effect us for the time being, but it will definitely effect our children, and our Childrens Children, and so On...So our decisions do matter, and what we leave for our next Generation matters Importantly

:peace: out,

I don't know.Because I've never died, and nobody has ever come back and told me,"Hey, when we die,we still exist!"
I know this. When we die, we do go in in a sense, because we return to the earth as we decay.....the nutrients are absorbed by plants,a caterpillar comes and eats the leaves from that plant, a bird swoops down and eats that caterpillar, then lands on a fence to get eaten by a quick housecat,etc....the gasses our bodies give off during composition are filtered through the soil, mixed into the air that every living thing breathes...hell, we've all got traces of Ben Franklin in us,lol. So even if there is no proof of an afterlife,I can take comfort in the fact that I will never completely cease to exist.I will just change form.:bigjoint:
